Okay, folks, let's talk about Under the Banner of Heaven, Episode 3. I know, I know, it's heavy stuff. Murder, religion, family drama... it's like a Thanksgiving dinner gone horribly, horribly wrong.
But bear with me. Because I have some thoughts. Unpopular thoughts, maybe. Thoughts that might get me banished from the Church of Television Critics.
Episode 3: Where Did The Time Go?
Did anyone else feel like Episode 3 was...a little slow? Don't get me wrong, Andrew Garfield is fantastic. He can brood and investigate with the best of them.

But the pacing felt like wading through molasses. We spent a lot of time going over the same ground. Searching for clues, revisiting conversations, enduring more of the Lafferty family's, shall we say, "unique" worldview.
The Lafferty Family Circus
Speaking of the Laffertys, wow. Just...wow. They are a special breed, aren't they? Their unwavering conviction, mixed with a healthy dose of conspiracy theories, makes for some compelling (if slightly terrifying) television.
I get it. We need to understand their background. We need to see how they got to this point. But did we need quite so much detail? My brain was starting to feel like it was trapped in a never-ending Sunday school lesson.
Honestly, I was starting to think the episode was a test of my patience. A spiritual endurance challenge disguised as a true crime drama.
Detective Jeb: Still Our Favorite (But Tired)
Poor Detective Jeb Pyre. He’s trying so hard. He is navigating this crazy case while grappling with his own faith. Andrew Garfield really sells the inner turmoil.
He's the moral compass of the show. He's the one we're rooting for. But even he seemed a little bogged down in this episode.
I wanted to shout at the screen, "Jeb, take a coffee break! Call your wife! Do something that isn't related to ritualistic murder!"
The Flashbacks: Essential or Excessive?
The flashbacks to the early days of Mormonism are fascinating. They provide important context. We get to see how these beliefs developed and evolved (or devolved, depending on your perspective).
But sometimes they felt a bit...interruptive. Just when the present-day investigation was gaining momentum, BAM! We're back in the 19th century, learning about polygamy and prophets.
I'm not saying they're not important. I'm just saying maybe a little less flashback, a little more present-day suspense? Is that too much to ask?
My Unpopular Opinion?
Okay, here it is. My confession. I found myself...bored. Just a little. Don’t get me wrong, the performances are great. The story is compelling. But Episode 3 felt like a lot of setup with not enough payoff.
Maybe it's just me. Maybe I have the attention span of a goldfish. Maybe I'm just impatient to see how this all unfolds.
But I'm hoping the next episode picks up the pace. I'm hoping for more twists, more turns, and maybe just a little less Lafferty family history. I need my true crime fix, and I need it now!
