Is The Major Alive In Violet Evergarden

Okay, let's talk about something controversial. Something that divides the Violet Evergarden fandom.
Is Major Gilbert Bougainvillea really, truly, dead?
The Elephant in the Room: Gilbert's Fate
We all saw the ending. Violet finally understands love. It's beautiful, tear-jerking stuff. But, like...did we really see Gilbert die?
Must Read
Bear with me. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm going to say it anyway. I think he might be alive!
I know, I know. Cue the outrage. "He was caught in an explosion!" "Violet saw him fall!" Yeah, yeah, I heard it all before. But hear me out.
Let's Consider the Evidence (or Lack Thereof)
Firstly, anime loves a good fake-out death. It's practically a trope. Think of all the characters who "died" only to pop up later with a convenient explanation.

Second, remember the war? It was messy. Accurate records? Probably not top priority. So, could Gilbert have been rescued and his survival simply not properly documented?
And third, Violet Evergarden is ultimately a hopeful story. A story about healing and finding happiness. Would the writers really rob Violet of her ultimate happy ending?
My Wild Theory (Embrace the Crazy)
Here's my theory. Gilbert was injured, badly. He lost his memory, maybe. He's been living a quiet life somewhere. Recovering, rebuilding.
He's heard whispers of the famous Auto Memories Doll, Violet Evergarden. He feels a connection, but doesn't understand why.

One day, he'll see her. Recognition will dawn. Cue the epic reunion, the happy tears, and the collective "Awww" from the entire fandom.
Okay, maybe I'm getting carried away. But a girl can dream, right?
Why I Refuse to Believe He's Gone
Honestly, part of my refusal stems from my deep-seated fear of tragic endings. I'm an optimist! I need my happy endings! And Violet deserves one.

Plus, the show never explicitly shows his dead body. Ambiguity is the writer's best friend. It leaves room for interpretation. And for hope!
Maybe the writers left it ambiguous on purpose. Maybe they wanted us to debate this for years to come. Maybe they'll even revisit the story someday. (Please, Netflix, make it happen!)
But What About Violet's Growth?
Some argue that Gilbert's death is essential to Violet's character arc. That she had to learn to live without him. And they’re right.
I agree that her growth is amazing. She learned so much about love. She built a life for herself. But that doesn't mean Gilbert couldn't come back and enhance that happiness.

Think of it this way: he's the cherry on top of an already delicious sundae. A bonus dose of happiness for a character who truly deserves it.
The Verdict? (My Unpopular Opinion)
So, is Gilbert alive? I don't know for sure. But I choose to believe he is.
It's my headcanon, and I'm sticking to it. It's more fun that way! Besides,
"Hope is the last thing ever lost."I think that Violet Evergarden is a show about hope, and it would be nice to have a little more of that hope realized.
What do you think? Am I completely delusional? Or is there a tiny spark of possibility that Gilbert is still out there? Let me know in the comments!
