How Old Is Satsuki In My Neighbor Totoro

Okay, let's talk about My Neighbor Totoro. Specifically, Satsuki. And even MORE specifically, how old everyone thinks she is.
The internet generally agrees she's eleven. But I have a controversial take. Buckle up.
The Official Story
Most sources say Satsuki is eleven years old. This is based on interviews and production notes. Studio Ghibli kind of confirms it. Seems pretty official, right?
Must Read
Well… not to me.
My Unpopular Opinion
I think Satsuki is secretly older. Maybe twelve? Possibly even thirteen! Hear me out.
Exhibit A: Responsibility
This girl is practically running the whole show! Her mom's in the hospital. Her dad is busy working. Someone needs to take care of Mei.

And Satsuki steps up! She cooks, cleans, does laundry, and gets Mei to school. Eleven-year-olds don't typically handle all of that. At least, I didn't.
Remember when you were eleven? I mostly remember trying to avoid chores. And failing miserably.
Exhibit B: Maturity
Think about how Satsuki handles stressful situations. Like when Mei goes missing! She rallies the whole town for a search party.
She pleads with the bus driver! She knows to go to Totoro for help. This isn’t the reaction of a typical eleven-year-old. This is sheer resourcefulness!

My eleven-year-old self would probably have just cried. Maybe eaten some ice cream. Definitely not organized a search party.
Exhibit C: The Older Sibling Vibe
Satsuki has that "older sibling who’s secretly exhausted but trying their best" vibe. You know the one. The sigh, the eye roll, the unconditional love.
That comes from years of practice. Not just eleven!

Why Does It Matter?
Okay, it probably doesn't REALLY matter. It’s a cartoon about a giant fluffy spirit, after all!
But it's fun to think about! To dissect the characters and their motivations. And to challenge the accepted "truth."
So, How Old Is Satsuki?
Officially, she's eleven. I'm just saying... maybe she's a very mature, responsible, and slightly world-weary eleven. Or maybe she is secretly older!
Either way, she's a fantastic character. And I will continue to admire her for all her hard work.

What do you think? Am I completely off base? Or is Satsuki a secretly older, super-powered older sister?
Let me know your thoughts! I'm ready to defend my (possibly) ridiculous theory.
And remember, even if she is only eleven, she is still a great character. Miyazaki created a truly unforgettable masterpiece.
Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to rewatch My Neighbor Totoro. For research, of course.
