Hashihime Of The Old Book Town Review

Okay, let's talk about Hashihime Of The Old Book Town. You know, that visual novel everyone seems to love? Yeah, that one.
My "Unpopular" Hashihime Opinions
Prepare yourselves. I have some... thoughts. Are they controversial? Maybe. Will you agree? Probably not. But here we go anyway!
First Impressions: Pretty Boys and Papercuts
The art is gorgeous. Seriously, those bishounen are eye candy. But pretty faces only get you so far, right?
Must Read
My first thought was, "Okay, detective story, cool aesthetic..." Then, BAM, the plot happened. It was like getting hit by a truck filled with used textbooks.
The Plot Thickens (and Thickens... and Thickens...)
The story? Dense. Like, a black hole of plot points dense. I felt like I needed a PhD in Japanese literature just to keep up.
All those twists and turns. My brain felt like a pretzel. A slightly soggy, overly complicated pretzel.

And the true ending? I honestly preferred the "bad" ones. Fight me.
Characters: Lovable Lunatics or Just Lunatics?
Let's be honest, most of these characters are...eccentric. "Eccentric" being a polite word for "completely bonkers."
I mean, I love a good troubled character. But sometimes, I just wanted to yell, "Get some therapy!" to the screen.
Tamamori, the protagonist, is supposedly a genius. But often, he felt more like a clueless observer. Did he ever solve anything?

The "Romance" Factor
This is supposed to be a BL game, right? Well, the romance felt... secondary. More like a side dish than the main course.
I was too busy trying to untangle the plot to really care about the ships. Sorry, shippers!
Maybe I'm just dead inside. Probably.
Atmosphere: Moody and Magnificent
Okay, I'll give it this: the atmosphere is fantastic. The game perfectly captures the feeling of old bookstores and rainy days.

The music is hauntingly beautiful. It really sets the mood. Even if that mood is "existential dread."
The setting itself, a pre-war Tokyo, becomes a character. The old book town feels alive and breathing.
Final Verdict: Overrated Masterpiece?
So, is Hashihime Of The Old Book Town a masterpiece? Many people think so. I'm... not entirely convinced.
It's definitely unique. And ambitious. But also, overwhelming and sometimes frustrating.

Maybe I'm just not smart enough to "get it." Or maybe, just maybe, it's a little overrated.
Don't get me wrong. I don't hate it. It's just... a lot. A whole lot. Like, a lifetime's worth of old books and repressed feelings kind of "a lot".
I would recommend it? Possibly. If you have a lot of free time. And a strong tolerance for melodrama. And maybe a walkthrough.
Just don't say I didn't warn you. You have been warned. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go lie down. My brain hurts.
