Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown Season 9 Episode 4

Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown Season 9 Episode 4

Manila with Bourdain: Okay, I Said It.

Okay, let’s talk Anthony Bourdain. Specifically, Parts Unknown. And even more specifically, Season 9, Episode 4: Manila.

Hear me out. I’m about to say something potentially controversial. Manila, while interesting, wasn't my absolute favorite.

Before You Come For Me...

Look, I adored Bourdain. The man was a legend. He opened our eyes (and stomachs) to the world.

His passion was infectious. His cynicism? Totally relatable. We miss him, right?

The Manila Episode: A Different Vibe

Manila…it felt different. Darker, maybe? More… intense.

Maybe it was the subject matter. Poverty, traffic, the complex political landscape. Heavy stuff.

I get it. Bourdain wasn't just about delicious street food (though, yum!). He wanted to show us the real deal.

Jeepneys and Jollibee

The jeepneys were visually stunning. Those things are works of art on wheels!

And Jollibee? I have to admit, I’m intrigued by the sweet spaghetti. I'd try it!

Bourdain diving into Filipino culture? Always fascinating. But something just didn't quite click for me this time.

Compared to Others…

Think about the episodes in Italy! Or Japan! Those were pure joy. Escapism at its finest.

Even the more serious episodes (like Beirut) had a certain…flow. A compelling narrative.

Manila felt a bit… disjointed. Like a collection of interesting, but not fully connected, stories.

Unpopular Opinion Alert!

Okay, here it is: Did anyone else find the episode slightly… depressing? I hate to say it.

It's a hard watch, exposing deep social issues. Powerful, but hard. Not exactly my go-to for comfort viewing.

I almost feel guilty saying that. Like I'm dismissing the struggles of the Filipino people. That's not my intention at all.

Appreciating the Effort

I still appreciate Bourdain’s dedication. He showed us the good, the bad, and the ugly. No sugarcoating.

He wanted to challenge us. Make us think. He succeeded!

Maybe that's why the Manila episode sticks with me. It made me uncomfortable, which is sometimes a good thing.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it. My (potentially) controversial take. Manila: important, thought-provoking, but not my personal favorite.

What do you think? Am I completely off base? Let me know!

And regardless, let's all raise a glass to Anthony Bourdain. A true legend.

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life—and travel—leaves marks on you.” - Anthony Bourdain
