The Great Age Gatekeeper

I'm talking about that screen. You know the one. The infamous "Sign into your primary account to confirm your age." It pops up more often than my mother-in-law on a Sunday.

I get it, YouTube. You're trying to be responsible. Protecting the kiddies. Good for you. But seriously, must you ask every time I want to watch a slightly edgy music video?

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like they're being carded at the internet bar? And I swear, I’m old enough to remember dial-up! I’ve seen things, man. Things you wouldn't believe.

The Login Loop of Despair

The worst is when you are logged in. You confirm your age. You click play. And…BAM! There it is again. The dreaded age confirmation screen. It's like a digital Groundhog Day.

Seriously, YouTube, do you think I’m aging backwards between videos? Do I suddenly look like a toddler who stumbled upon a Nine Inch Nails music video? It's insulting!

I'm pretty sure my "primary account" already knows I’m closer to needing reading glasses than needing a babysitter. Maybe they think my viewing history is suspect. Okay, maybe it is a little weird.

My Unpopular Opinion

Here’s where I might lose some of you. My unpopular opinion? I kind of miss the wild west days of the internet. The days before algorithms and age verification.

Remember when you could just…click and watch? No constant logging in. No endless scrolling. Pure, unadulterated video enjoyment! Ah, those were the days.

I'm not saying we should let kids watch whatever they want. But the constant, nagging reminders are a bit much, aren't they? It's exhausting!

It feels like I spend more time proving my age than actually watching videos. Maybe I need a t-shirt that says, "I AM OVER 18, PLEASE LET ME WATCH CAT VIDEOS."

The Search for a Solution (That Doesn't Exist)

I’ve tried everything. Clearing cookies. Different browsers. Praying to the internet gods. Nothing seems to work. YouTube just loves to see me squirm.

I even considered getting a fake ID for YouTube. But then I realized that was probably going too far. Even for me.

So, here I am. Trapped in the age verification vortex. Signing in. Confirming. And secretly judging the video that made me jump through all these hoops. Was it even worth it?

Is It Me, Or Is It YouTube?

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m the only one who finds this whole age verification thing slightly annoying. Maybe I’m just an old man yelling at the cloud.

But I suspect I'm not alone. There must be others out there who feel my pain. The pain of constantly proving they’re not a child.
