Okay, hear me out. Remember that movie, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop? The one with the shy guy who loves haiku and the girl hiding her smile?

Before you grab your pitchforks, let me explain. Everyone seemed to adore it. I'm talking glowing reviews. But for me? It was more like lukewarm soda. You know, the kind that’s been sitting out for too long.

The premise is cute, right? Boy meets girl through a very specific series of events. He wears headphones to avoid talking. She hides her teeth.

Haiku Highs and Low Smiles

The haiku was supposed to be this amazing connection point. It felt... forced. Like someone read a haiku textbook and said, "Yep, that's romance!"

And her smile? Of course, she's gorgeous when she reveals it. But the build-up felt a little too drawn out. A bit too much drama surrounding some teeth.

Don't get me wrong, the animation is beautiful. Studio Signal.MD did a great job with the color palette.

The whole aesthetic is very pleasing to the eye.

But pretty visuals don't automatically equal a great story, do they?

Where's the Fizz?

Maybe I'm just a cynical old soul. Maybe my expectations were too high. All I know is, I didn't get the fizzy feeling everyone else seemed to get.

I wanted to be swept away by the poetic awkwardness. I wanted to cheer when they finally connected. I just... didn't.

The side characters felt a little flat too. They were there, but they didn't add much to the overall flavor. Like the ice in my already lukewarm soda.

The whole social media aspect was also a bit clunky. It felt shoehorned in. Like they needed to check some "modern relevance" box.

Maybe It's Me?

Perhaps I just wasn't the target audience for Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. Maybe I need more explosions and less shy glances in my anime romances.

Or maybe, just maybe, it's okay to not love something everyone else is raving about. Remember Yama Sakura, no one talks about this masterpiece!
