Let's be honest. The Rookie has seen its fair share of drama. But one departure hit harder than a perp resisting arrest: Jackson West's.

His death shocked us. It felt sudden. Some even thought it was unnecessary. Did he really need to go?

The Official Story (You Know, The Boring One)

Of course, there's the explanation. Titus Makin Jr., the actor who played Jackson, left the show. He cited reasons related to racial injustice and wanting to step away from portraying law enforcement at that time. Respectable, definitely.

But did the writers have to kill him off? Couldn't they have sent him to Quantico? Or maybe witness protection after a harrowing case?

My Unpopular Opinion: Jackson Was Holding The Rookie Back

Here's where I might lose some of you. Deep breaths. I actually think Jackson's departure, while sad, opened up possibilities for the show.

Hear me out! He was a good character. Kind, eager, and always striving to do the right thing. But maybe, just maybe, he was becoming a little…predictable?

His storyline often revolved around him learning and growing. Which is great! But after a while, it felt like he was constantly playing catch-up. The show needed a shakeup.

The Show Must Go On (And Did!)

Jackson's death, as brutal as it was, created a ripple effect. It impacted all the characters. It forced them to confront their own vulnerabilities and the dangers of the job.

Suddenly, no one was safe. The stakes were higher. The show became more intense and arguably, more compelling. New characters got a chance to shine.

Think about it. Did Jackson's absence make room for characters like Celina Juarez (played by the awesome Lisseth Chavez)? Did it allow for more complex storylines involving other rookies?

Was There Another Way? Probably. But...

Could they have written him out differently? Sure. He could have transferred to a different precinct. He could have joined the FBI. The possibilities were endless.

But killing him off gave the show a jolt of realism. It reminded us that being a cop is dangerous. That not everyone gets a happy ending. It added a layer of grit and emotional depth that was missing before.

I am not saying I enjoyed watching Jackson die. I cried. I really did. But objectively speaking, his exit served a purpose. It pushed the narrative forward.

The Legacy of Jackson West

Jackson West will always be remembered as a good cop. A loyal friend. A character we rooted for. His death was a loss, no doubt.

But sometimes, the most shocking departures are the ones that ultimately benefit the story. His death impacted the show for the better.

So, while I mourn Jackson, I also acknowledge that his death changed The Rookie. It made it more unpredictable, more emotionally charged, and ultimately, more watchable (sorry, not sorry!).

"He was a good man." - Probably everyone who watched The Rookie.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to re-watch the first few seasons. Just to remember the good old days... with Jackson.
