Why Was I Am Not Okay With This Cancelled

The Mystery of I Am Not Okay With This: Gone Too Soon?
Let's be honest. We've all had shows we adored suddenly vanish. Like socks in the dryer, they're just...gone. I Am Not Okay With This was one of those shows for many. It promised awkward teenage drama and superpowers! What went wrong?
Netflix giveth, and Netflix taketh away. It's the streaming service circle of life. But this one felt personal, right?
The Official Story (Probably)
The "official" reason usually involves budget and scheduling conflicts. The pandemic messed things up big time! Filming became a logistical nightmare.
Must Read
Apparently, continuing the show would have cost a pretty penny. Maybe Netflix just didn't see the return on investment. Sigh.
My Unpopular Opinion: It Was a Tad...Predictable
Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. Sophia Lillis was fantastic as Sydney Novak. Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Barber was also a great casting.
But, let's face it, the "angsty teen discovers powers" trope is well-trodden ground. We've seen it before, haven't we? Buffy, Carrie, even X-Men.

Did it offer enough new stuff to justify multiple seasons? Maybe not. I dare to say that the ending was rather predictable.
Was It Too Inspired By Other Shows?
The show definitely had a very Stranger Things vibe. The retro setting, the quirky characters, the supernatural elements.
It’s not a bad thing to be inspired, of course. But perhaps it leaned a little too heavily on what already worked. Standing out in a sea of content is hard!

The End of the Fing World* Connection
Both shows shared a similar dark humor and offbeat storytelling. Jonathan Entwistle directed both. This style is unique and enjoyable.
But The End of the F*ing World had a concise, impactful ending. Maybe I Am Not Okay With This just didn't know where it was going. Perhaps the writers didn't want to drag it out.
Netflix's Algorithm Strikes Again
Let's not forget the all-powerful Netflix algorithm. It decides our fates! It probably factored in viewership numbers and completion rates.

If enough people weren't binging it, well, you know the story. The algorithm deemed it not worthy. Harsh, but true.
The Cliffhanger That Never Was
That ending! Sydney's dad/monster looming in the shadows. So many questions!
We'll never know what was planned for season two. The frustration is real. Could it have become something truly special? We can only imagine.

Maybe It's Better This Way?
Hear me out. Sometimes, leaving us wanting more is a good thing. It preserves the magic, doesn't it? Avoids potential "jumping the shark" moments.
I Am Not Okay With This remains a quirky, memorable little show. A small gem of teenage angst and superpowers. Maybe that's enough. A true cult classic.
So, while the cancellation stings, maybe, just maybe, it was for the best. Or maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better.
