Who Were The Kids In Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Let's talk about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Specifically, those kids. You know, Jeremy and Jemima. Were they… actually any good?
The Darling Duo: Angels or Annoyances?
Okay, hear me out. I know, I know. They're orphans. They're adorable. They sing. But did anyone else find them just a tad… much?
It's an unpopular opinion, I admit it. But someone's gotta say it. Their wide-eyed innocence bordering on, well, slightly irritating.
Must Read
Jeremy: The Boy Who Loved Candy (and Caractacus)
Let's start with Jeremy, played by Adrian Hall. He’s energetic, definitely. He also had a serious sweet tooth. Remember all those lollipops?
He clung to Caractacus Potts like a limpet. I get it, single dad figure. But still, dial it back a notch, kid! Was it just me?
He even got to sing a few lines. Can you recall a single thing about his voice? Me neither. Sorry, Jeremy.

Jemima: Sweet, Silent, and… There?
Then there was Jemima, played by Heather Ripley. She was cute, no denying that. And mostly quiet.
Honestly, Jemima felt more like a prop. A very adorable, blonde-haired prop. But a prop nonetheless.
I mean, what did she actually do? Besides look precious and get kidnapped by the Child Catcher? Seriously, tell me.
Let's Be Real: They Were Plot Devices
The truth is, Jeremy and Jemima weren't really characters. They were plot devices. Caractacus needed motivation. The Baron needed something to threaten.

Cue two conveniently orphaned children. It all makes sense now. They were basically walking, talking MacGuffins.
Of course, they added a certain charm. But a charm that felt, at times, a bit… manufactured. I am ready for the outrage.
The Child Catcher: Villain or Justified? (Kidding!)
Okay, I'm obviously kidding about the Child Catcher being justified. That guy was terrifying. No arguments there.

But maybe, just maybe, a tiny part of me understood his frustration. Imagine dealing with those kids all day! No, I'm definitely kidding now.
Robert Helpmann played him brilliantly. A truly iconic villain. And terrifying to children everywhere.
The Verdict: Loved Them, Tolerated Them, Or… Avoided Eye Contact?
So, who were the kids in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? They were… kids. With all the good and slightly-annoying qualities that come with the territory.
They were cute. They were convenient. And they helped move the story along. What more could you ask for?

But were they the best child actors of all time? Let's just say they probably wouldn't win any awards from me. Please don't hate me!
Ultimately, I'm happy they were there. The movie wouldn't be the same without them. But next time I watch it, I might fast-forward through a few of their scenes. Just a few. Don't tell anyone!
What do you think? Am I a terrible person for saying this? Let me know. (But be nice!).
Just remember, "Roses round the door, make the dust lie on the floor." Unless you have two energetic orphans running around!
