Who Was The Original Host Of Weakest Link

The Weakest Link: A Host of Memories
Okay, let’s talk Weakest Link. Remember that show? The quiz where people were nice (or not-so-nice) until they got the boot?
But who was the original host? That’s the question that keeps me up at night. No, really. It's a semi-frequent thought.
Anne Robinson: The Queen of Mean?
Everyone shouts, "Anne Robinson!" You know, the woman with the icy stare and the brutal put-downs. The one who made "You are the weakest link. Goodbye!" a national catchphrase.
Must Read
She was amazing. Seriously, she oozed a unique brand of condescension. It was strangely addictive to watch.
But here’s my (possibly) unpopular opinion... Was she really the original?
Before Anne: A Glimpse into the Past
Think back. Way back. To the pilot episode in the UK. Were you watching? Because I have a confession... I wasn't.

It was hosted by William G. Stewart. Yes, the man from Fifteen to One! I know, mind blown, right?
Okay, so he wasn't exactly "mean." He just...wasn't Anne. The pilot remains unaired but it existed!
The American Takeover
Then came the US version. Again with Anne Robinson. We Americans loved a bit of British sass.
Did we even know there could have been another host? Nope. Anne owned that role. End of discussion.

Or... is it?
My Bold (and Probably Wrong) Claim
Here's where I get controversial. I believe William G. Stewart deserves more credit. He may not have had the iconic delivery.
He laid the groundwork! He was the very first person to ask those trivia questions. To watch contestants squirm.

Does a pilot episode count? I say yes! He was technically the Weakest Link's birth father.
Okay, Maybe I'm Wrong. Probably.
I know, I know. Everyone remembers Anne Robinson. She is the face of the show.
She brought the zing, the zang, and the "You’re an embarrassment!" to our screens. She made the format what it was.
Maybe William G. Stewart was more like a beta test. A prototype of what was to come. He was the test subject!

The Verdict (Sort Of)
So, who was the original host? It's a bit of a philosophical question, isn't it? Depends on your definition of "original."
Did you watch the pilot episode? Did it leave a mark on you?
For me, I am going to say, William G. Stewart, I salute you! You may be the answer to a very specific trivia question. And you may be the weakest link. But you are my weakest link.
Ultimately, it probably is Anne Robinson. But let me have my fun, okay?
