Who Did Yuki End Up With In Fruits Basket

Okay, Fruits Basket fans, let's talk. We all cried, laughed, and screamed at our screens. But there's one question that still causes some debate: Who Yuki Sohma really ended up with?
The Obvious Answer (Or Is It?)
Most will say it's Machi Kuragi, right? She's sweet, she's quirky, she balances him out. They have that whole opposites-attract thing going on. It makes perfect sense... on the surface.
Don't get me wrong, Machi is great. But hear me out before you grab your pitchforks! Maybe, just maybe, Yuki's greatest love story wasn't romantic at all.

My Unpopular Opinion
Ready for it? I think Yuki Sohma ended up with… himself! I know, sounds cheesy, right?
Think about it. The entire series is about him finding his own identity. He's always trying to escape Akito's shadow, to find his place. He's searching for belonging that doesn't rely on the zodiac curse.

He spends so much time comparing himself to Kyo. He's always questioning his worth. He’s an angsty teen! Relatable, right?
The Journey to Self-Love
Meeting Tohru Honda was a huge turning point, obviously. She showed him kindness and acceptance. She made him feel seen for who he was, not what he was "supposed" to be.
But Tohru didn't magically fix everything. She helped him start his journey. The real work, the deep introspection, that was all Yuki.

He had to learn to forgive himself for not being Kyo. He had to accept his weaknesses and celebrate his strengths. This is a big deal!
Machi: The Final Puzzle Piece?
I'm not saying Machi is irrelevant! She's definitely important in his story.

She helps him express his emotions and be vulnerable. She becomes a loving partner. She helps him build a normal life.
But I think she comes into his life after he's already started loving himself. She's the cherry on top of a self-love sundae, not the ice cream itself.
So, Who Really Wins?
Ultimately, Yuki's story is about overcoming trauma and finding inner peace. It's about recognizing his own value. It's about self-acceptance. It is a wild ride!

He learns to trust and believe in himself. He breaks free from the expectations placed upon him. This is the real victory. It's beautiful.
So, while Machi is undoubtedly his romantic partner, I'd argue that Yuki Sohma truly ended up with himself. He finally found the love and acceptance he craved, from the most important person of all.
What do you think? Am I totally off base? Let me know in the comments!
