When Did The First Season Of Survivor Air

Okay, let's talk Survivor. Specifically, when did this glorious trainwreck...I mean, strategic masterpiece...first grace our screens? You probably already know. But humour me.
The correct answer is May 31, 2000. I know, right? Feels like a lifetime ago. A time before social media truly took over. Remember dial-up internet? Good times.
The Dawn of Reality TV (Sort Of)
Survivor: Borneo, as it was originally called, launched on that fateful day. Think about it: the Y2K bug was supposed to end the world just months before! Instead, we got Richard Hatch and his naked ambition. Coincidence? I think not.

It was like nothing we'd ever seen. Strangers, forced to cooperate (or backstab) each other on a deserted island? Sign me up!
The Before Times: A World Without Survivor
Pre-Survivor, our reality TV landscape was...well, pretty tame. We had The Real World. But that was more about living together and making questionable life choices (which, granted, is also a Survivor theme).

Then Survivor arrived, dropping us into a tropical setting with strategy at the forefront. It made winning the whole point. Not just getting camera time.
Suddenly, everyone was obsessed with alliances. And immunity idols. And the age-old question: Do you vote with your head or your heart? (Spoiler alert: always your head. Unless your heart can find a hidden immunity idol.)
Unpopular Opinion Time (You've Been Warned!)
Here's where I might lose some of you. But the early seasons are the best seasons. Fight me. Okay, don't actually fight me. But let's discuss it!

Before everyone became a master strategist knowing all the meta-game rules, these were genuinely people trying to figure it all out. The naiveté was delightful.
Think about Sue Hawk's infamous "rats and snakes" speech. Iconic. Would that happen now? Maybe. But it wouldn't feel as raw. As real.

Did It Age Well? Debatable. Is It Still Great? Absolutely.
Of course, some aspects of early Survivor haven't aged gracefully. Let's just say society was in a different place in 2000. And some of the casting choices...yeah.
But the core concept is timeless. The human drama. The paranoia. The scramble for power. It’s all incredibly entertaining.
And let's not forget Jeff Probst. He’s been there since day one, judging us all with his steely gaze and perfectly coiffed hair. He's the constant in our chaotic Survivor lives. He is the show!

So, What Have We Learned?
Survivor premiered in 2000. It changed the game. And it gave us countless hours of entertainment. And a burning desire to find a hidden immunity idol in our own backyards.
Maybe I am over-romanticizing things. But sometimes, going back to the beginning is worth it. Especially when that beginning involves backstabbing, rice rations, and the eternal question: Who will be the next one voted off the island?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go binge-watch Survivor: Borneo. For, like, the tenth time.
