Whats The Difference Between Hulu And Hulu Plus

Okay, let’s talk about Hulu and… wait for it… Hulu Plus. Remember that? Did it even exist? My brain is starting to feel like a scrambled egg.
It feels like ancient history. Like trying to explain dial-up internet to a teenager. Prepare for my unpopular opinion, though!
Was Hulu Plus Just… Hulu?
Seriously, what was the difference? You paid money for both, right? Weren't we all just trying to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer
without resorting to sketchy torrent sites?
Must Read
I remember commercials claiming more content!
. But was it really more, or just… less painfully outdated? It felt like a marketing trick to me.
The Era of Limited Episodes (and our suffering)
Back in the dark ages (aka the early 2010s), free Hulu teased you. A few episodes, then BAM! Locked away. You needed Hulu Plus to unlock the rest.
It was like a digital ransom situation. Pay up, or forever wonder what happened to Lorelai and Rory! Was this really the best way to treat us, Hulu?

Honestly, I think the real difference was frustration levels. Free Hulu = high frustration. Hulu Plus = slightly lower frustration. Margin was very small though.
Ads, Ads Everywhere
Let’s not forget the real villain of this story: the ads. Oh, the ads! Seemed like every five minutes, BAM! A car commercial.
Or a really loud ad for some snack I didn't even want. Hulu Plus might have had fewer ads? Maybe? My memory is hazy, probably from the sheer trauma.

Did paying solve it? No. Not really. Which kind of make me laugh hysterically on the inside because that's just how capitalism do.
The Plus That Wasn't So Plus
So, Hulu Plus offered more episodes and maybe fewer ads. But did it drastically change the viewing experience? Debatable.
It felt more like a necessary upgrade to actually use the service. Like buying a car and then having to pay extra for the steering wheel. That's right. I said it!

Maybe I'm just being cynical. But I suspect many of us secretly felt robbed (but were too engrossed in Parks and Recreation
to complain). I'm calling us out, guys.
Good Riddance, Hulu Plus (Maybe?)
Thankfully, the days of Hulu Plus are (mostly) behind us. Now we just have… different tiers of Hulu. With varying amounts of ads. Progress?
It's like they learned absolutely nothing. Just kidding! Sort of. At least we can binge entire seasons now (usually).

The name change has been long over-due. And to be fair, they do offer a lot more content now. I will give credit where credit is due!
So, the next time you're scrolling through Hulu, remember the simpler (and arguably more annoying) times of Hulu Plus. And raise a glass to the shows that got us through it.
Cheers! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some serious binging to do.
