We jump from happy(ish) beginnings to full-blown abuse pretty quickly. I wanted more depth. More understanding.

"But it was a biopic! They can't show everything!"

And the music?

Of course, the music is iconic. Tina Turner's voice is a force of nature. But sometimes, it felt like a music video interspersed with scenes of domestic violence.

A powerful, emotional music video, granted. But still. Where was the build-up? Where was the why?

I needed more context. I wanted to understand the dynamic better. Not just see the blow-ups.

Let's talk about Ike.

I know, he's the villain. He's irredeemable. But even villains have motivations. He isn't just evil for evil's sake, right?

A little more insight into his character would have been nice. Instead, he's a one-dimensional monster. Which is disturbing. But also, kind of boring.

Maybe that's the point? To show the absolute horror Tina endured. But I think it did a disservice to the complexity of human relationships.

Maybe I'm just jaded.

I've seen a lot of biopics. A lot of movies about abuse. Perhaps I'm expecting too much.

Maybe What's Love Got To Do With It was groundbreaking for its time. I acknowledge that possibility.

However, by today's standards? It feels a little... surface level. There is no "free" of charge ticket that will change my mind on this one.

Don't get me wrong... Again

I appreciate the message of empowerment. Tina's resilience is inspiring. She's a legend.

But the movie? It's good. Not great. And definitely not a cinematic masterpiece in my humble opinion.
