What We Do In The Shadows Season 2 Episode 1

Okay, let's talk about What We Do in the Shadows. Season 2, episode 1. "Resurrection." It’s time. I'm ready to be controversial.
People seemed to LOVE it. I’m here to say, maybe, just maybe, it’s a tad overrated.
The Return of Derek
The whole episode centers around Nadja bringing back her human love, Derek, from the dead. He's… not exactly right. Shocking, I know.
Must Read
He’s basically a floppy, undead puppy. It's funny, sure. But was it that funny?
The Problem with Derek (and Maybe the Episode)
Here’s my thing: The Derek storyline felt… predictable. We knew he wouldn't just pop back as a suave, sophisticated vampire.
The joke of "reanimated corpse is clumsy and gross" has been done. A lot.

I get it. It’s a comedy. Expect the unexpected. But even the unexpected can become expected after a while, right?
Like, the talking heads segments where they describe their vampire lives and explain what happened to Derek, are still brilliant. Especially what happened with Laszlo during the whole Derek situation.
"He had a little accident... involving Derek."
Nandor's Quest for Respect
Nandor’s desperate need for respect from his familiars was a good subplot. The constant demands and Colin Robinson's endless droning were hilarious.

Though, Nandor is always good for a laugh. Is it just me or is Nandor secretly the funniest vampire in the household?
Colin Robinson: Energy Vampire Extraordinaire
Speaking of Colin Robinson, he was on top form. Draining energy with his dull stories and office antics is his brand.
He's the king of killing conversation. We all know a Colin Robinson, don't we?.

My Unpopular Opinion: It's Good, But Not Great
Don't get me wrong, "Resurrection" is a solid episode. It has all the elements we love about the show. The mockumentary style, the witty writing, the absurdity.
Maybe I just expected more. The series built up a high expectation since season 1 and I felt like the jokes and storytelling was something that was already done.
But I stand by my slightly-controversial stance. It's good, but it's not the best. Am I alone here?

The rest of the season is amazing though. There's some real gold in there. So, don't let my lukewarm feelings about episode one deter you!
It’s still What We Do in the Shadows after all. Even a slightly-less-than-perfect episode is still better than most comedies out there.
So, grab your garlic (or don't, if you're a vampire), settle in, and enjoy the rest of the season. Just maybe skip ahead if undead Derek isn't your thing.
