What We Do In The Shadows Episode 1

Okay, let's talk What We Do in the Shadows. Specifically, episode one. I know, it's practically a sacred text to comedy nerds.
But I'm going to say something potentially controversial. Maybe… just maybe… it's a tad overrated?
The Pilot Episode: A Classic... Maybe?
Look, I get it. Mockumentaries are great. Vampires are hilarious when they're inept.
Must Read
The concept of centuries-old bloodsuckers struggling with modern life? Pure genius. Nandor's unwavering devotion? Chef's kiss!
But, is the first episode really the pinnacle of the entire series? I'm not so sure.
The Humor: Hits and Misses
Some jokes land perfectly. The opening with Nandor trying to hypnotize the camera crew? Gold. Pure gold.
And who can forget Laszlo and Nadja's… unique relationship dynamic? Hilarious!

However, other moments felt a little… forced? Like they were trying too hard to be quirky.
Maybe it's just me. Maybe I had expectations that were impossibly high.
The Characters: Still Finding Their Fangs
Don't get me wrong, the actors are fantastic. They embody their roles perfectly.
Colin Robinson is already draining the energy from every scene. Guillermo is the long suffering familiar we all secretly root for.
But in episode one, the characters are still… developing. They haven't quite reached their full potential of glorious ineptitude.

They feel like sketches of the characters we'll come to adore. Not the fully fleshed-out (or rather, blood-drained) personalities we know and love.
The Plot: A Slow Burn?
The plot of the first episode is simple: The vampires are being visited by their leader, The Baron. Hilarity ensues.
But compared to some of the later episodes? It feels a bit… tame. The stakes (pun intended!) aren't quite as high.
We are just getting introduced to the world, so there's a lot of exposition to get through.
And the whole "cleaning up after feeding" bit? I'm sorry, but it doesn't compare to some of the later, more outlandish scenarios.

Why I Still Love the Show
Despite my (possibly heretical) thoughts on episode one, I absolutely adore What We Do in the Shadows.
It's one of the funniest shows on television. The writing is sharp, the performances are brilliant, and the premise is endlessly entertaining.
The show gets better and better each season. The characters grow, the storylines become more absurd, and the jokes get even funnier.
Guillermo's evolution alone is worth the price of admission. From downtrodden familiar to… well, I won't spoil it!
My Unpopular Opinion: Confirmed?
So, maybe episode one is just a launching pad. A necessary introduction to a world of vampire silliness.

Maybe it's unfair to compare it to the later, more polished episodes.
But I stand by my (mildly) controversial opinion: What We Do in the Shadows gets even better after its first episode. Don't stop there!
Go forth and binge! You won't regret it. Just... maybe skip to episode two first?
Just kidding! (Mostly.) Now tell me I'm wrong in the comments!
I'm ready for the vampire pitchforks!
