What We Do In The Shadows Cast Season 1

Okay, picture this: you're a vampire. Not a sparkly, brooding-in-the-rain kind of vampire. We're talking about the kind of vampire who's been around for hundreds of years and is terrible at adulting. Welcome to the hilarious world of What We Do In The Shadows, Season 1!
The show follows the lives of four vampire roommates living in Staten Island. Yes, Staten Island. Because why would ancient, powerful beings choose somewhere glamorous? It’s just funnier this way.
Meet the Roommates (and Guillermo!)
First up, we have Nandor the Relentless. He fancies himself a fearsome warrior. But mostly he just ends up ordering his familiar, Guillermo, to pick up his dry cleaning. He’s the well-meaning but ultimately clueless leader of the group.

Then there’s Laszlo Cravensworth, a charming rogue with a penchant for topiary shaped like…well, let's just say adult things. He’s married to Nadja and they have a very…unique…relationship.
And speaking of Nadja, she's a strong-willed, seductive vampire. She's definitely the brains of the operation. She's also prone to being possessed by the ghost of her past lovers. Because, you know, normal vampire stuff.

Finally, there’s Colin Robinson. He's an energy vampire. He doesn't suck blood. He sucks your energy by being incredibly boring. Imagine that colleague who drones on and on about spreadsheets. Now imagine that person is also a vampire. Horrifying, right?
Let's not forget Guillermo! He is Nandor's long-suffering familiar. He dreams of becoming a vampire himself. He cleans up all their messes. And trust me, there are a lot of messes.
What Happens in Season 1? Absolute Chaos!
Season 1 is basically a glorious train wreck of vampire incompetence. They try (and mostly fail) to conquer Staten Island. It involves a lot of awkward encounters with humans and other supernatural creatures.

They have to deal with everything from neighborhood disputes to vampire council meetings. The council is scarier in theory than in practice. Picture a bunch of bored, ancient vampires sitting around judging each other's outfits. You get the idea.
One of the funniest storylines involves the vampires trying to understand human technology. They struggle with everything from the internet to TV remote controls. Imagine trying to explain Twitter to someone who's lived through the Ottoman Empire. Good luck!
The show is filmed in a mockumentary style. So, the vampires are constantly being interviewed by a documentary crew. This adds another layer of comedy. They try to look cool and menacing. They just end up looking ridiculous.

There's an episode where they accidentally kill a bunch of vampires. They then have to figure out how to dispose of the bodies. Hilarity ensues! The show is full of moments like that. Moments that are both gruesome and laugh-out-loud funny.
Another great episode involves a chain email. The vampires are convinced it's a curse. They spend the whole episode trying to break the curse. It's a brilliant satire of internet culture and superstition.
But at the heart of it all, What We Do In The Shadows is about found family. These vampires may be dysfunctional. They are stuck with each other. And they (sort of) care about each other. Even Colin Robinson. (Maybe.)

Season 1 ends on a major cliffhanger involving Guillermo. It hints at a secret about his lineage that will change everything. It sets the stage for even more hilarious and chaotic adventures in the seasons to come.
So, if you're looking for a comedy that's smart, silly, and genuinely original, give What We Do In The Shadows a try. Especially Season 1. You won't regret it. Unless you're easily offended by vampire shenanigans. Then maybe stick to sparkly vampires.
