What Is So You Think You Can Dance On

Let's be honest. We've all watched So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD). It's a summertime staple, like ice cream and sunburns.
The Premise (Or What We Tell Ourselves)
On the surface, it's a dance competition. Talented dancers compete to be crowned "America's Favorite Dancer."
They perform various styles, from ballroom to hip-hop. Judges offer critiques, sometimes helpful, often dramatic. We vote. Rinse and repeat.

But Is That Really What It's About?
Okay, unpopular opinion incoming! I think there's more to it than just the dancing. Don't get me wrong, the dancing is amazing.
But let's dive deeper, shall we? What are we really tuning in for every week?
The Crying. Oh, the glorious crying! Contestants cry, judges cry, even the audience members seem to be tearing up sometimes. Is it from the beauty of the art form? Probably… but also maybe from the intense pressure and sleep deprivation.

The Romance (Or Attempted Romance). They pair these dancers together. Then, they make them perform intimate routines. It's inevitable that sparks might fly, right?
The show loves to play up these "connections." Even if it's just a fleeting moment of almost-romance, the cameras are READY.
The Backstories. Every dancer has a story. Usually, it involves overcoming adversity through the power of dance. Which is great!
But sometimes, I feel like I'm watching a very elaborate, choreographed therapy session. Pass the tissues, please.

The Nigel Lythgoeisms. Okay, he's not there anymore, but the spirit lives on. You just knew he'd say something outrageous and slightly inappropriate. It was part of the fun... or was it?
Dance Styles: Explained (Sort Of)
Contemporary: Flowy, emotional, and probably involves rolling on the floor. Lots of dramatic arm gestures.
Hip-Hop: Energetic, cool, and involves a lot of popping and locking. Somehow, even awkward people look cool doing it on this show.

Ballroom: Elegant, graceful, and involves complicated footwork I can't even begin to comprehend. Also, sequins. So many sequins.
Jazz: Fun, sassy, and involves a lot of leaps and turns. Dancers always seem to be having the time of their lives (or pretending to).
Let's Get Real: Why We're Really Watching
It's the drama, isn't it? It's the highs, the lows, the unexpected eliminations. It's the suspense of wondering who will nail the choreography.
Plus, the show gives us a glimpse into a world of dedication and artistry. Even if it's a slightly manufactured glimpse, it's still captivating.

So, next time you're watching SYTYCD, remember what you're really watching. It's not just a dance competition.
It's a masterclass in drama, emotion, and the art of looking really, really good while wearing sparkly costumes.
And, of course, it's about the dancing... mostly.
And maybe, just maybe, you'll shed a tear or two. Don't worry, we won't judge. We're probably crying too.
