What Happened To Will In The Good Wife

Whatever Happened to Will? Let's Talk.
Okay, let's be real. We all remember that episode of The Good Wife. The one where Will Gardner... well, you know.
It's been years, and people still talk about it. Was it necessary? Was it good for the show? Did we all need therapy after?
The Shock Value Was Real
I mean, come on! Nobody saw it coming. One minute Will is arguing a case, the next...bam! Gone.
Must Read
It was like the writers were trying to make us feel something. And boy, did they succeed! We were all a mess, right?
Suddenly, law dramas were scarier than horror movies. Like, no character is ever safe from unexpected death!
But Did It Really Work? (Unpopular Opinion Alert!)
Here's where I might lose some of you. I actually think Will's exit… might have been a good thing. Gasp!

Hear me out. The show was kind of circling the drain with the Alicia/Will thing. The will-they-won't-they? It was exhausting.
Maybe his death was the only way to truly move Alicia forward. To rip off the band-aid and let her actually evolve.
The Post-Will World: Messy But Interesting
After Will died, the show went… a little bananas. But in a good way. Sort of.
Alicia became even more ruthless. She embraced the darkness. It was fascinating (and sometimes frustrating) to watch.

Would she have reached that point if Will was still around? Probably not. She might have stayed stuck in that comfortable, yet boring, dynamic.
Was There Another Way?
Of course, the writers could have sent Will to another country. Or had him become a judge. Or given him amnesia and a new life as a llama farmer.
But, let's face it, those options are kinda lame. TV death provides instant drama. It is also very final, which often means a character is truly gone.
Killing off Will certainly stirred things up. It forced Alicia (and the audience) to confront some uncomfortable truths.

The Legacy of Will Gardner
Even though he's gone, Will is still a huge part of The Good Wife legacy. His death shaped everything that followed.
He's like that ghost that keeps haunting the Florrick & Agos office. Always present, always remembered.
So, what happened to Will? He became a plot device. A catalyst. And, dare I say, a necessary evil for a show that needed a serious shake-up.
Final Thoughts (and Maybe Some Hate Mail)
Look, I know this isn't a universally popular opinion. Many fans are still mourning Will (and probably cursing the writers' names).

But I truly believe that his death, while tragic and shocking, ultimately made The Good Wife a more interesting show.
So, go ahead. Tell me I'm wrong. I'm ready for your angry comments. But deep down, you know there’s a tiny part of you that agrees with me.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go re-watch Season 5 and cry a little. Because even I miss Will Gardner. Just not that much.
