What Breed Is Buck From Call Of The Wild

Okay, let's talk about Buck. You know, from The Call of the Wild. Big dog, pulls sleds, goes a little…wild? Yeah, that Buck.

Everyone thinks they know what breed he is. But I'm here to throw a bone of contention (pun intended!). Are we really sure?

The Official Answer (and Why I Disagree)

Officially, Buck is a Scotch Collie and St. Bernard mix. That's what Jack London tells us. Case closed, right?

Wrong! I have a theory, a slightly unconventional one. Hear me out.

St. Bernards are HUGE. Collies? Not so much. Buck is described as big and powerful.

But St. Bernards are also, let's be honest, a bit… clumsy? Buck's agile and a quick learner.

Collies are smart. Really smart. But Buck learns to survive in the wild. He understands complex social dynamics.

That level of adaptability? That's more than just collie smarts. It's something else.

Let's not forget Buck's whole "becoming a wolf" arc. He hears the call of the wild, joins a wolf pack.

Collies and St. Bernards don't typically ditch their cushy lives for the wilderness. My grandma's collie certainly didn't.

I think… I think Buck has some German Shepherd in him. I said it!

Don't get me wrong, I respect the Scotch Collie/St. Bernard answer. But GSDs are big, smart, loyal, and can be fiercely independent.

They also have that inherent pack drive. That willingness to protect and lead. That's Buck!

Think about it. A GSD mix would explain Buck's size, his intelligence, and his trainability. Even his independent streak.

And let's face it, they're gorgeous dogs. Buck is described as a handsome beast. Coincidence? I think not!

"But Jack London said..." I know, I know. But maybe he was just going for something "romantic."

"Shepherds weren't as common then..." Okay, fair point. But dog breeding wasn't as exact science. Maybe there was some accidental genetic mingling?

We'll never really know. The Call of the Wild is fiction, after all.

But isn't it fun to speculate? To imagine our own version of Buck's lineage?

Maybe he's a Collie/St. Bernard/German Shepherd/dash of something completely wild. The possibilities are endless!

Regardless, Buck is a legend. A symbol of strength, loyalty, and the pull of the wild.

And that's something we can all agree on, right?
