Dwight's Day Off (Sort Of): A Hilariously Bleak Look at The Walking Dead Season 7, Episode 2
Okay, so maybe "hilarious" isn't the first word that comes to mind when you think of The Walking Dead. But trust me, "The Well" was something special.
Remember that super bleak Season 7 premiere? The one where Negan redefined the word "brutal"? Well, Episode 2 offered a... palette cleanser, of sorts. This time, we got a deep dive into the world of Dwight, Negan's right-hand man (or, more accurately, Negan's right-hand tortured soul).
Behind the Barbed Wire: Dwight's "Normal" Life
Imagine your life being a constant cycle of dread, servitude, and existential angst. That's pretty much Dwight's daily routine. We see him living in the Sanctuary, a grimy, industrial complex ruled by Negan and his Saviors.
Must Read
He's got a wife (sort of – it's complicated), a job (collecting things for Negan), and a whole lot of resentment simmering beneath the surface.
The episode unfolds like a bizarre, post-apocalyptic sitcom. Except instead of laugh tracks, you get the unsettling feeling that at any moment, Negan could walk in and ruin everyone's day... which, let's be honest, is pretty much what happens in every episode anyway.

Pickles and Toast: The Height of Luxury at The Sanctuary
One of the funniest (and saddest) things about this episode is the glimpse we get into what passes for "luxury" at the Sanctuary. Dwight's big treat? A measly jar of pickles and some burnt toast.
Seriously, after all the scavenging and brutality, that's the best he can do? It's almost comical. It highlights how Negan controls even the smallest aspects of his followers' lives, dangling the promise of comfort just out of reach.

You can't help but feel a tiny bit sorry for Dwight, even though he's done some pretty terrible things. The dude is clearly miserable. It's like watching a sad puppy try to survive in a world run by wolves.
The Burning Question: Can Dwight Be Redeemed?
The whole episode is a slow burn (pun intended, considering that whole toast situation). We see glimpses of the man Dwight used to be before Negan turned his life upside down. He clearly still has a conscience.

He helps his wife, Sherry. He shows moments of kindness (however fleeting). This leaves us with a big question: Is redemption possible for him? Can he ever break free from Negan's grip and become a force for good?
It's a question that hangs heavy in the air long after the credits roll. And that's what makes "The Well" such a compelling episode.

King Ezekiel: A Glimmer of Hope (and a Pet Tiger!)
Although the main focus is on Dwight, we are introduced to King Ezekiel! We met King Ezekiel, a flamboyant and charismatic leader who lives in a seemingly idyllic community called The Kingdom.
The best part of The Kingdom is the King's pet tiger, Shiva. You read that right, a tiger! This is arguably the best character in all the show, I mean, it is a Tiger in Zombie Apocalypse world!
"Sometimes, the only way to smile is to have a pet tiger" - King Ezekiel, probably.
The ending of "The Well" shows that, even in the darkest of times, there's always the potential for hope and change. And maybe, just maybe, a little bit of humor too.
