Watch On My Block Season 1 Episode 1

Okay, let's talk On My Block. Specifically, Season 1, Episode 1. Am I the only one who had... complicated feelings? Don't get me wrong, I love the show. But that first episode? Whew.

First off, the setting. Freeridge feels so real, you can practically smell the churros. But also, maybe feel a little anxious about walking home alone after dark? Just me?

And the characters! Monse, the strong, independent one. Ruby, the romantic with a heart of gold (and some serious abuela issues). Jamal, the conspiracy theorist. And Cesar, the guy caught up in… well, you know.

Unpopular Opinion Time (Brace Yourselves)

Here's where I might lose some of you. I wasn't immediately sold on everyone in that first episode. Especially Cesar. I know, I know, sacrilege! But hear me out.

He's got that whole "troubled soul" thing going on. But in the beginning, he just seemed… mopey. Like, "Oh, woe is me, I'm in a gang." Come on, dude, at least try to smile once!

Okay, maybe that's harsh. But compared to Ruby's over-the-top dramatics and Jamal's hilarious paranoia, Cesar just felt…dull. Sorry not sorry.

Then there's Monse. I admire her strength, I really do. But in the first episode, she also came across as a little…bossy? Like she was constantly telling everyone what to do.

Don't get me wrong, someone needs to keep those boys in line. But maybe a little less "commanding officer" and a little more "supportive friend" would have been nice.

The Real Star (In My Humble Opinion)

Who did I love from the get-go? Jamal Turner. That kid is a comedic genius! His quest for the Rolling Twenty treasure is pure gold.

Every time he dramatically whispered about “gnomes” or dodged imaginary bullets, I cracked up. He brought the much-needed light to the story.

And let’s not forget Ruby. Even though his infatuation with Olivia felt a bit much, you gotta admire his dedication. The whole Quinceañera scene? Iconic.

Let's Be Real, Though...

Despite my initial reservations about certain characters, the episode definitely hooked me. The cliffhanger with Olivia's arrival? Genius! I needed to know what was going to happen next.

And that's the magic of On My Block, right? It draws you in with its humor, its heart, and its relatable characters. Even the ones who annoy you a little bit.

It portrays real friendships, real struggles, and real consequences. Even though it's funny, it doesn't shy away from the tough stuff.

A Final Thought

So, yeah, Season 1 Episode 1 wasn't perfect. But it laid the groundwork for something special. And honestly, who am I to judge? I was probably just jealous of their tight-knit friend group.

Plus, I'm pretty sure if I lived in Freeridge, I'd be just as awkward and clueless as Jamal. Maybe even more so.
