Urusei Yatsura Movie 6 Always My Darling

Okay, let's talk Urusei Yatsura. Specifically, Always My Darling. It's movie number six, and maybe I'm crazy, but hear me out.
I kinda... love it? More than some of the other movies, even. Don't throw your electric shock devices at me just yet!
A Dream Within a Dream?
The plot is, well, classic Urusei Yatsura chaos. Ataru gets cursed. He can't see Lum, but everyone else can.
Must Read
It's a bizarre premise. Then things escalate rapidly from there. Giant robots and multiple realities become involved. You know, Tuesday for Tomobiki-cho.
The whole "dream logic" vibe is strong. It feels like one long, hilarious fever dream. But is it really just a dream?
Why I Think It Works
Maybe it's the slightly more experimental feel. It dares to be weirder. And in a show that's already pretty darn weird, that's saying something.

I also think it delves a little deeper into Ataru's feelings. He's usually just a horndog. But this time, you see the guy's actual panic at the thought of losing Lum.
Sure, he's still chasing skirts the whole time. Old habits die hard, I guess! But the underlying fear is palpable.
Plus, the visuals are stunning. The dreamscapes are inventive and vibrant. The animation is top-notch. The colors pop off the screen.

I think it is visually among the most stunning anime movies of its day.
Unpopular Opinion Time
I know, I know. Some people find it confusing. They say it doesn't make sense. And they're probably right.
But who watches Urusei Yatsura for perfect logic? Isn't the whole point to embrace the madness? Just go with the flow!

Besides, some of my favorite moments in life make no sense. A triple-scoop ice cream cone at 3 AM? Sure. A spontaneous karaoke session? Why not!
Maybe Always My Darling is the anime equivalent of that. Pure, unadulterated, nonsensical joy.
It's All About the Feels
Ultimately, I think this movie gets to the core of Urusei Yatsura. It's about the weird love between Ataru and Lum.

It's about chaotic friendships. And it's about accepting the absurdity of life, even when a giant, reality-bending robot is involved.
And let's face it, Lum in that movie? Iconic. She's adorable, she's fierce, and she just wants her darling! Who can resist?
So, yeah. I love Urusei Yatsura Movie 6: Always My Darling. It’s my hill, and I'm prepared to die on it.
Maybe you'll disagree. Maybe you think I'm completely bonkers. But at least give it another watch. Maybe you'll see what I see. Or maybe you'll just see more crazy alien antics. Either way, you win!
