Under The Banner Of Heaven Cast Episode 1

"Under the Banner of Heaven" Episode 1: So, Did We Really Need Another True Crime Drama?
Okay, okay, I know. Everyone was buzzing about Under the Banner of Heaven. Andrew Garfield? Religious mystery? Sign me up, right?
But after watching episode one, I have a confession: my eyebrows are still raised, but not in a good way. More like a "did-we-really-need-this?" kind of way.
The Mormons: Nice Guys or Secret Cultists?
The episode dives headfirst into the story. We meet Detective Jeb Pyre (played by our beloved Andrew Garfield). He's a good Mormon boy investigating a brutal murder.
Must Read
His faith is immediately tested. It's like, "Hey, welcome to work! Now question everything you believe in!" Tough Monday.
But here's my unpopular opinion: the show plays up the "mysterious Mormon" angle a little too hard. Are we supposed to automatically assume everyone with a hymn book is a potential axe murderer?
The subtle hints of something darker lurking beneath the surface are there. And that’s interesting! But come on, let's not paint everyone with the same brush.

The Lafferty Brothers: Officially Creeped Out
The Lafferty brothers are… something else. They're definitely the prime suspects. And boy, do they deliver on the creepy factor.
Their whole vibe is just off. They have the kind of intensity that makes you want to slowly back away.
I’m not saying the actors did a bad job. Quite the opposite! They embodied the unsettling nature of their characters perfectly. In fact, maybe too perfectly.

Andrew Garfield: Sweet but Slightly Bland?
Let's talk about Andrew Garfield. He's always watchable. I mean, it’s Andrew Garfield!
But something felt a little... restrained. Maybe that's the point of his character.
However, I was hoping for more sparks of his signature charm. Perhaps it will come later. But so far, Pyre feels a bit...vanilla.

The Flashbacks: History Lesson or Narrative Distraction?
The episode is packed with flashbacks. We see the origins of Mormonism. We see the story of Joseph Smith.
Some might find it enlightening. I found it a little... distracting.
It's like the show can't decide if it wants to be a true crime drama or a history documentary. Maybe a better balance will emerge as the story unfolds.

The Verdict (So Far): Jury's Still Out
Don’t get me wrong, Under the Banner of Heaven has potential. The acting is solid, and the premise is intriguing.
But episode one left me feeling slightly underwhelmed. It teeters a bit too heavily on the "Mormonism equals creepy" stereotype.
Will I keep watching? Probably. I'm a sucker for a good mystery. But I'm hoping the show will delve deeper than surface-level scares and provide a more nuanced exploration of faith, doubt, and the darkness that can lurk within anyone, regardless of their religion.
Maybe episode two will change my mind. Fingers crossed... and eyes wide open!
