Trans Person From Orange Is The New Black

Let's talk about Sophia Burset from Orange Is the New Black, shall we? Okay, maybe this is just me. But I think she's one of the most compelling characters in the whole show!
Sophia: More Than Just Hair
Sure, Sophia (played by the fantastic Laverne Cox) is known for her mad hairstyling skills. She's basically Litchfield's personal hairdresser, right? But there's so much more to her than just braiding and extensions.
I think her journey is really interesting. She's navigating prison life. And all the while dealing with the challenges of being a trans woman.
Must Read
We see her pre-transition life through flashbacks. These scenes show her family, her former work as a firefighter, and the struggles she faced. You can't help but feel for her, even when she messes up.
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
Okay, here it comes. My unpopular opinion? Sophia is actually one of the most reasonable people in Litchfield. Hear me out!
Compared to some of the others. Like Crazy Eyes, Pennsatucky, or even Piper Chapman. Sophia often tries to be logical and fair. Well, most of the time.

She doesn't always succeed, of course. Prison life is bound to get to you. But she makes an effort, doesn't she?
Family Matters and Conflicts
Her relationship with her son, Michael, is a real heartbreaker. Seeing her fight to stay connected with him despite everything is so touching. That storyline really got me.
Then there's the whole thing with Gloria Mendoza. Remember their feud? It was pretty intense!
It started with a disagreement. Escalated into religious differences. And ended up with some serious betrayal.

I actually understood both sides, even though they both messed up. You know, people acting out of character is quite common in prison.
A Complex Character
Sophia isn't perfect. She makes mistakes. She's stubborn at times.
But that's what makes her such a great character! She's flawed, complex, and relatable.

She shows strength and vulnerability. And that's the kind of character that sticks with you long after the show is over.
More Than Just Representation
Laverne Cox's portrayal of Sophia is groundbreaking. She brought visibility to the trans community. But more importantly, she made Sophia a real person.
She made her someone viewers could empathize with. Regardless of their own backgrounds.
The role gave Laverne Cox a chance to showcase her incredible acting skills. And I think she nailed it.

So, What's the Verdict?
Look, I know everyone has their favorite Orange Is the New Black character. But Sophia deserves some serious recognition.
She's funny. She's resilient. And she's way more grounded than she gets credit for.
So, next time you're re-watching the show. Give Sophia another look. You might just agree with me.
Maybe you'll think that Sophia Burset is one of the most underrated characters from Orange is the New Black.
