One of the most bizarre aspects was the policy of appeasement. Basically, Britain and France tried to keep Hitler happy by giving him… well, whatever he wanted. Think of it as trying to appease a toddler throwing a tantrum by giving them candy. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work.

"Oh, you want Czechoslovakia? Sure, go ahead!" It was like they were hoping he'd eventually get bored and stop. He didn't.
