The Last Episode Of All In The Family

Okay, folks, let's talk about something potentially controversial. Something that might make some of you clutch your pearls. I'm talking about the very last episode of All in the Family.
Now, before you grab your Edith Bunker memorial hankies, hear me out. I'm not saying the show was bad. Quite the opposite! It was groundbreaking and hilarious.
But that finale? Hmm. Did it really stick the landing? I have my doubts.
Must Read
Remember "Too Good Edith"?
The episode is called "Too Good Edith." It's... well, it's a tearjerker, to put it mildly. Edith Bunker dies. A pretty big blow, right?
It’s a touching episode, no doubt. Jean Stapleton was irreplaceable. But was it the right ending?
I mean, All in the Family tackled so many tough issues. But this... this felt like a gut punch for the sake of a gut punch.

Did It Undermine the Show's Message?
One of the things I loved about the show was its humor. It used laughter to make us think about serious topics. It felt honest, even when it was exaggerated.
But "Too Good Edith" mostly skips the humor. It's wall-to-wall sadness. And while sadness is real, wasn't the show about more than just despair?
I think it shifted the show's identity in a weird way. It went from a sitcom that made you think to a drama that made you cry. Big difference!

Sure, Archie was meant to be sad! It showed growth! But was that what we needed from the finale?
My Unpopular Opinion: It Should Have Been Funnier
I know, I know. Blasphemy! But hear me out. Imagine a final episode where Archie Bunker has to deal with something absurd.
Maybe a zoning dispute over his chair factory. Or a misunderstanding involving a pet raccoon. Something ridiculous and characteristically Archie.

The writers could have subtly acknowledged Edith's absence. Maybe a photo on the mantelpiece. Or Archie quietly missing her at the dinner table.
That way, the show could have honored Edith's memory while staying true to its comedic roots. It could have given us a bittersweet goodbye. And kept us laughing.
I'm not saying it would have been easy. But it would have been a more fitting tribute, in my humble opinion. End with a bang, not a sob.

Ultimately, It's Subjective
Of course, this is just one person's perspective. Many people loved "Too Good Edith." They found it moving and powerful. And that's perfectly valid!
But for me, the episode just felt…off. Too heavy. Too much of a departure. It didn’t capture the full spirit of All in the Family.
I think the heart of the show lay in its ability to find humor in the everyday struggles of life. And that’s what I wish the finale had given us. A little more laughter, a little less anguish.
What do you think? Am I totally off base? Let me know! Maybe you can change my mind. (But probably not.)
