The Case Study Of Vanitas Vanitas Death

Okay, let's talk Vanitas no Carte, or The Case Study of Vanitas if you're feeling fancy. It's a show about vampires, mysteries, and a guy named Vanitas. He carries a spooky book. Pretty standard anime fare, right?
Except, hear me out. I think... I think death in this series is a little...underwhelming. Prepare for my hot take. I might get flamed for this.
The Stakes Are High...ish
We're told repeatedly that the stakes are HUGE. Vampires are going berserk. The world is teetering on the edge of chaos. Vanitas and Noé must save everyone!
Must Read
But does it feel that way? Honestly, sometimes it feels more like a particularly dramatic episode of Scooby-Doo. Minus the dog, of course.
Consider this. We're supposed to be terrified of the corrupted vampires. Yet, most of them are defeated fairly quickly. Sometimes with a witty one-liner.
Death's Door Revolving Door
Characters often find themselves in mortal peril. Gasp! Clutch your pearls! But then... they're fine. A last-minute save, a convenient power-up, or just plain plot armor.

Look, I get it. Not everyone can die. It's a story, not Game of Thrones. But the constant near-death experiences lose their impact after a while.
It's like the anime is afraid to commit. Afraid to let a meaningful character bite the dust. Pun intended, naturally.
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
And here's the real kicker. The corrupted vampires? I often feel less sympathy for them than I should. They're often portrayed as monsters, which makes it harder to mourn them.
I'm not saying they shouldn't be scary, but a little more nuance would be nice. Show us their pre-corruption lives! Make us care!

Otherwise, it's just monster-of-the-week syndrome. And killing them feels more like pest control than tragedy.
I’m not saying it’s bad. It's just not reaching the level of emotional devastation I think the show is aiming for.
Vanitas: The Unkillable?
Speaking of avoiding death, let's talk about Vanitas himself. He's constantly throwing himself into danger.
He’s dodging attacks, making risky gambles, and generally acting like a complete maniac. A lovable maniac, granted. But a maniac nonetheless.

And yet, he always pulls through. Is Vanitas immortal? Maybe! Probably not, but it sure feels that way sometimes. He’s a cockroach!
Now, is there some secret power at play? Some hidden destiny? Probably. But until then, I remain skeptical of his supposed fragility.
My Verdict (Don't Hate Me!)
So, to sum up: I love The Case Study of Vanitas. I adore the characters, the art style, and the overall story.
But the death aspect? I'm not convinced. It feels a bit... toothless. For a show about vampires, it needs a little more bite.

I do want emotional bite, you know? I want to cry for the characters, both good and bad. So far, I am just enjoying the ride.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not advocating for a bloodbath. But a little more emotional weight would go a long way.
Maybe I’m just a heartless monster. Or maybe I just want Vanitas and Noé’s world to truly feel dangerous. What do you think? Let me know in the comments (but be nice!).
