Thank You For The Food In Japanese Anime

Ever watched anime and heard a character yell something before digging into a bowl of ramen?

It's probably "Itadakimasu!" That's the Japanese phrase we're talking about.

It's like saying "Thank you for this food!" But is it REALLY necessary EVERY. SINGLE. TIME?

The Ritual Before the Feast

Anime characters do it religiously. Before sushi, before bento, even before questionable cafeteria meals. Itadakimasu!

They clasp their hands together. They bow slightly. It's all very polite.

But sometimes, I wonder... is it just anime tradition gone wild?

Okay, here it comes. I might get some flak for this.

I think the constant "Itadakimasu!" is a tad... repetitive. Especially in action-packed shows.

Imagine Goku about to devour a mountain of food after saving the world. Another Itadakimasu!?

Sure, gratitude is great! But wouldn't a quick nod suffice when aliens are about to invade again?

I get the sentiment, I really do. The Japanese culture places a huge emphasis on respect.

They appreciate the effort that went into preparing the meal. From the farmer to the chef, everyone gets a shout-out (in spirit, at least).

And it's not just about thanking the people. It's also about acknowledging the life that was given to create the meal. Heavy stuff!

But let's be real. Sometimes these characters are scarfing down instant noodles in a dimly lit room.

Are they REALLY contemplating the sacrifice of the wheat and the dedication of the factory workers?

Or are they just REALLY hungry and following a script? I'm leaning towards the latter.

And let's not forget the post-meal ritual! "Gochisousama deshita!" It means "Thank you for the meal!"

More hand-clasping and bowing. It's a full-blown performance!

Don't get me wrong, I admire the politeness. It's just that sometimes I feel like I'm watching a table manners tutorial disguised as an anime.

Look, I'm not saying we should abolish "Itadakimasu!" from anime altogether.

It's a cultural thing! It's part of what makes anime, well, anime.

But maybe, just maybe, a little variety wouldn't hurt. Perhaps a grunt of satisfaction? A satisfied sigh?

Or, dare I say, skipping it altogether when a giant robot is attacking? It's just a thought!
