Sword Art Online Season 1 Episode 4

Let's Talk About Sword Art Online Episode 4, Shall We?
Okay, guys, let's be real. Episode 4 of Sword Art Online Season 1. "The Black Swordsman." It's got some… things going on.
Unpopular opinion time: I kind of like it! I know, I know. Prepare the pitchforks. But hear me out.
The Sachi Situation
So, Kirito joins a guild, the Moonlit Black Cats. Seemed like a good idea at the time, right? He even hid his level from them!
Must Read
And then… Sachi. Oh, Sachi. Poor girl. She's scared of dying in the game, which, valid! Who wouldn't be?
Kirito, our stoic hero, tries to help. Tries to reassure her. Spoiler alert: it doesn't exactly work out.
Dungeon Disaster
Then BAM! They get trapped in a high-level dungeon. Cue the monster hordes. Total chaos ensues!

The guild, including Sachi, meets a tragic end. It's supposed to be super sad and impactful. And, yeah, it is a bit.
But… something about it feels rushed, doesn't it? Like, "Okay, gotta kill off these characters to give Kirito angst!"
Kirito's Guilt Trip
Kirito, naturally, blames himself. He always does. It's kind of his thing.

He spends the rest of the episode wallowing in guilt. Trying to find a way to bring Sachi back.
Enter the Christmas event and the revive item. Oh boy... Can you see where this is going?
Christmas and Coping
Kirito manages to get the item. Excitement builds! He uses it on Sachi... Surprise! It doesn't work.
Apparently, the item only works within a short time after death. Sachi's message plays on Christmas day. Prepare for the waterworks.

I'm not crying, you're crying! Okay, maybe I teared up a little. But just a little!
Why I (Secretly) Enjoyed It
Look, I get the criticisms. The pacing is wonky. The character development is… limited. It leans hard on the melodrama.
But here's the thing: it's memorable. It establishes Kirito's survivor guilt. It shows the stakes of the game. Death is permanent (mostly). And Christmas messages... Ugh... hit hard.

Plus, it gives us a glimpse into Kirito's softer side, even if it's buried under layers of "cool" and "aloof."
In Conclusion (and a Question for You)
So, yeah. I have a soft spot for Sword Art Online Episode 4. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But it's entertaining in its own dramatic way. I also want to give it a nod for creating a really messed up Christmas memory.
It gave me a strong feeling of melancholy, just the right amount to be memorable.
Now, I want to know. Am I alone in this? Or are there other secret Sword Art Online Episode 4 enjoyers out there? Confess!
