Sword Art Online Alicization Season 2 Episode 18

Okay, let's talk about Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld Episode 18. Specifically, THAT episode. You know the one I'm talking about. The one that made the internet EXPLODE.
I know, I know, bringing up the past is a dangerous game. But hear me out! I have a confession. An unpopular opinion, maybe. Deep breaths, here it comes…
A Little…Over the Top?
Look, I get it. SAO can be dramatic. It's got high stakes, lots of screaming, and characters who are always on the verge of tears (or death). But that episode? Whew. Even I felt like it was dialing the drama up to eleven.
Must Read
I mean, come on. We're talking about characters dealing with digital PTSD. Virtual pain. It's a lot to take in. Sometimes, I just wanted to yell at my screen, "Can't we have ONE episode without someone screaming in agony?!"
Did it need to be THAT graphic? Seriously. I'm not saying the show should be sunshine and rainbows, but… maybe dial it back a notch, guys?
Enter the Fluff Zone (Please?)
Okay, picture this: SAO, but with slice-of-life interludes. Kirito teaching the Integrity Knights how to make ramen. Asuna braiding Alice's hair. Klein trying (and failing) to flirt with Selka. I would watch the HECK out of that.

Instead, we got… well, we got what we got. And what we got was… INTENSE. So intense I needed a palate cleanser of cute cat videos afterwards.
Don't get me wrong, the stakes are high, the bad guys are bad and the good guys fight to win! But that episode? It was just too much at one time.
The Cliffhanger Effect
And then there's the cliffhanger! Oh, the cliffhangers. SAO loves its cliffhangers. It's like they're addicted to leaving us hanging by a thread.

Episode 18 left me speechless. Not in a good way, either. More like, "…what just happened?" kind of speechless. Then you have to wait an ENTIRE WEEK to find out what happens next! Talk about torture!
Though, I guess, that's the point, right? To keep us hooked. Well, mission accomplished, SAO writers. Mission accomplished.
Was it Necessary?
So, here's the question that's been gnawing at me: Was all that… darkness… really necessary? Did we need to see everything to understand the stakes? Or could they have achieved the same emotional impact with a little more subtlety?
Maybe I'm just a wimp. Maybe I can't handle the sheer intensity of SAO. But I stand by my opinion: that episode was a little much. A little too gruesome. A little too…screamy.

It probably did help build the stakes in the story, but did it have to be so intense? I felt like I needed therapy after watching it.
Let's All Agree to Disagree
Look, I still love SAO. I'm still invested in the story. I'm still rooting for Kirito and Asuna (and Alice, of course).
And I'm sure plenty of people will disagree with me. They'll say that episode 18 was a masterpiece of emotional storytelling. That it was a necessary depiction of the horrors of war (even virtual war). And that's okay!

But for me? It was a bit too much. I wanted a little more light. A little more hope. And a lot less screaming. Okay? Great. Now, who wants to watch SAO Abridged with me?
And seriously, Reki Kawahara, thank you for making Sword Art Online. I wouldn't waste my time talking about a story I don't love.
Now, let's hope for a brighter future for everyone in Underworld!
