Stiff As A Board Light As A Feather

Remember "Stiff As A Board, Light As A Feather?"
Oh, childhood. Filled with skinned knees, questionable fashion choices, and trying to levitate your friends.
I'm talking about that super creepy, yet totally captivating, game: "Stiff As A Board, Light As A Feather."
The Ritual
You'd gather around your unsuspecting pal. Four to six people was usually the magic number.
Must Read
Everyone puts their fingers under the person lying down. Then the chanting starts. "Stiff as a board, light as a feather…" repeated ad nauseam.
Supposedly, after enough chanting, the person becomes miraculously weightless.
The (Unpopular) Opinion
Here's where I might ruffle some feathers. I think it was always... a little staged. A little bit of collective wishful thinking.
Don't get me wrong, I wanted to believe! I dreamt of effortlessly hoisting my friend Sarah into the air.

But let’s be real, were we REALLY lifting someone? Or were we all just subtly, subconsciously, coordinating our efforts?
The Physics of Friendship (Maybe?)
Think about it. Six people applying slight upward pressure? Spread out evenly?
That’s not magic. That's basic weight distribution. It's like when you and your friends lift a heavy couch to move into a new apartment. There is nothing magical about it.
We were young, impressionable. We also really, really wanted to believe in the supernatural.

The Power of Suggestion
And let's not underestimate the power of suggestion! All that chanting? It probably did more than we think.
Hearing those words, feeling the collective anticipation, probably loosened us up. We were more willing to believe, and therefore, more willing to subconsciously lift a little harder.
“Stiff as a board, light as a feather…" More like, "Eager to please, easily suggestible!"
The Back Pain Reality
Speaking of lifting a little harder... anyone else remember their fingers cramping? Or their back aching?

If the person was truly weightless, shouldn't lifting them have been… easier? Less… spine-crushing?
I'm just saying, my adult back can confirm: no magic involved. Just good old-fashioned (and slightly awkward) manual labor.
Still Fun Though!
Despite my cynical (and possibly blasphemous) take, I still think it's a fun game! The suspense, the giggles, the sheer absurdity of it all!
Even if it wasn't actually magic, it felt like it. And sometimes, that's all that matters. Right? Right?

Plus, it was a great way to bond with your friends. Shared awkwardness is a powerful connector.
The Verdict?
So, was "Stiff As A Board, Light As A Feather" real magic? Probably not.
Was it a testament to the power of suggestion, collective effort, and the enduring human desire to believe in the impossible? Absolutely!
And let's be honest, wouldn't it be amazing if it was real? Who knows, maybe with enough chanting, I could finally convince my couch to levitate itself.
A girl can dream, right?
