So You Think You Can Dance Season 17: My Unpopular Opinions (Don't @ Me!)

Okay, let's be honest. Season 17 of So You Think You Can Dance was...different. It was like trying to make a smoothie with only slightly-past-their-prime bananas. It was still a smoothie, but something was missing.

First off, the judging panel. We all missed Nigel Lythgoe, right? No offense to the new crew, they were fine! But Nigel's snarky charm was a staple.

I missed the OG judges. Remember Mary Murphy's screaming?! That was iconic.

The Talent Was There...Sort Of

The dancers were definitely talented. I mean, they wouldn't be on the show if they weren't! But did anyone else feel like the overall vibe was a little…underwhelming?

Maybe it was the shortened season. Everything felt rushed. The dancers didn't have time to really shine.

And the choreography? Some routines were fantastic! Others felt like they were thrown together in a hurry. I wanted more wow-factor, you know?

Anyone remember the tap routine where one dancer almost tripped? I think that sums up the season.

The Format Changes? Yikes!

Okay, let's talk about the elephant in the room: the format changes. The age limit was lowered. The stage was different. Everything felt new...but not necessarily improved.

I'm all for shaking things up! But it felt like they were trying too hard to reinvent the wheel. The wheel was fine! It just needed a new coat of paint!

Also, did anyone notice that some of the dancers seemed...similar? Not in a bad way, but there wasn't as much diversity in dance styles as I would have liked.

The Winner? Deserved, But...

Look, the winner was talented. Absolutely talented. But did they have that star quality that previous winners had? I'm not so sure.

It felt like they were technically proficient, but lacked that certain spark. That thing that makes you say "WOW!" when they step on stage.

I'm not saying they didn't deserve to win! Just that the competition felt a little less fierce this season. I was less invested.

My Unpopular Opinion: Bring Back the Old Days!

Don't get me wrong, I still love So You Think You Can Dance. But Season 17 felt like a shadow of its former self.

Maybe it was the pandemic. Maybe it was the format changes. Whatever it was, something was off. I just missed the old days!

I want the screaming judges. I want the elaborate costumes. And most of all, I want to be completely blown away by every single performance. Is that too much to ask?

I just hope Season 18 goes back to what made the show great. More talent. More drama. More Mary Murphy screams!
