Singing In The Rain Singing In The Rain

Okay, let's talk about Singin' in the Rain. That's right, the movie everyone adores. I'm about to whisper something that might make you gasp.
Is It Really That Good?
Hold on, before you grab your pitchforks. I'm not saying it's bad. But is it the absolute, undisputed champion of musicals? Hmmm...
Maybe, just maybe, it's a tad... overrated. I know, I know. Blasphemy!
Must Read
Gene Kelly's Splashy Number
The iconic scene! Gene Kelly dancing in the rain! It's undeniably charming. And brilliantly choreographed, absolutely.
But let's be honest. How many times have you actually watched the whole movie versus just that one clip? Be honest!
I bet your answer is probably the rain scene, right?
A Plot Thicker Than Pea Soup
The plot? Silent film star struggles with the transition to talkies. It's a cute premise. But does it grab you by the collar and refuse to let go?

Not really. Sometimes it felt like the plot was a way to string musical numbers together.
And, let's face it, how engaging is the silent film part?
Kathy Selden: Sweet But...
Debbie Reynolds is adorable as Kathy Selden. Truly adorable, bubbly and full of life!
But is she the most compelling female character in cinematic history? Probably not.
She's kind of... there. A sweet romantic interest. A lovely singer.

Those Other Songs...
Apart from the title track, are there other songs you find yourself humming regularly? "Good Morning"? Maybe.
The rest kind of fade into the background, don't they? They're perfectly fine. But not exactly earworms.
Are those the songs you will put on a playlist? I doubt it.
The "Broadway Melody" Ballet
Okay, this is where I might lose some of you. The "Broadway Melody" ballet sequence? I'm sorry, but it drags. Like, really drags.
It's long and self-indulgent. And feels like it belongs in a completely different movie.

It really slows down the fun the rest of the movie is having, it needs a pause button.
Unpopular Opinion Time!
So, here it is. Singin' in the Rain is a good musical. A classic, even. But is it the untouchable masterpiece everyone claims it is?
I think, that there are many other musicals that are better.
Maybe it's the nostalgia goggles talking. Maybe it's the power of that one iconic scene. Whatever it is, I'm standing my ground.
It's Still Fun!
Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy Singin' in the Rain. It's a joyful, feel-good movie. Perfect for a rainy day, unsurprisingly.

But let’s admit, it's not a cinematic Everest.
Just a really, really good hill with a particularly spectacular puddle at the top.
Just My Two Cents
So, there you have it. My slightly sacrilegious thoughts on a beloved classic. Feel free to disagree. In fact, I encourage it!
Maybe I'm completely wrong. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I just need to watch Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" scene again.
But for now, I'm sticking with my unpopular opinion. Singin' in the Rain is great... but perhaps a tiny bit overhyped. What do you think?
