Sidonia No Kishi: Ai Tsumugu Hoshi Watch

Okay, hear me out. I watched Sidonia No Kishi: Ai Tsumugu Hoshi. And you know what? It was...fine.
I know, I know! Sacrilege! Blasphemy! How dare I not sing praises to this anime space opera?
Giant Robots in Space - Yawn?
Look, I like giant robots. I genuinely do. But did they have to be fighting space squids... again? It felt a bit repetitive.
Must Read
Don't get me wrong, the animation was pretty. All those sleek Gardes zooming around are nice to watch. But pretty visuals can't save a predictable plot, can they?
Maybe I'm just jaded. Maybe I've seen too many anime where humanity is on the brink of extinction.
Nagate Tanikaze: Is he really that interesting?
Our hero, Nagate Tanikaze? He's...a guy. He eats a lot. He's good at piloting. Standard anime protagonist fare, if you ask me.

I get that he's supposed to be this beacon of hope. But he felt kind of bland. Like unsalted rice cakes. Filling, but not exactly exciting.
And his harem situation? Okay, I admit, it was a little amusing. But also kind of cliché. Can we move past the "dense protagonist surrounded by adoring females" trope, please?
The Waifu Wars - Oh boy
Speaking of females...let's talk about the waifu wars! Shizuka Hoshijiro! Tsumugi Shiraui! Everyone's got their favorite, right?

I'm not picking sides! They're both fine characters. But all the shipping drama is a bit much for me.
I prefer characters that have a bit more...depth. Something beyond just being in love with the main character. Give me a strong, independent woman (or giant robot) any day!
That Ending, Though...
Okay, I'll admit. The ending had some emotional moments. I almost teared up...almost.

But then it went all...weird. Time travel shenanigans? Alternate realities? My brain started to hurt.
I appreciate the attempt at being clever and mind-bending. But it felt convoluted and unnecessary.
In Conclusion: An Unpopular Opinion
So, there you have it. My unpopular opinion. Sidonia No Kishi: Ai Tsumugu Hoshi? It's okay. Not terrible, not amazing. Just...okay.

Maybe I set my expectations too high. Maybe I'm just burnt out on the genre. Or maybe, just maybe, it's a little overrated.
But hey, that's just my opinion. And you know what they say about opinions... they're like
belly buttons: everyone's got one.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go rewatch Cowboy Bebop. Because that's a real space opera masterpiece. Don't @ me.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way?
