Sailor Moon Characters Names In English And Japanese

Okay, let's talk Sailor Moon names. We all love them, right? But sometimes, the English and Japanese versions are... different. And I have thoughts.

Usagi Tsukino vs. Serena Tsukino: A Bunny by Any Other Name?

First up: Usagi Tsukino. Or, as many of us first knew her, Serena Tsukino. "Usagi" means "rabbit" in Japanese. "Serena"... doesn't mean rabbit. At all.

Look, I get it. They wanted something easier for English speakers. But Serena? It just doesn't scream clumsy, crybaby superhero, does it?

Unpopular opinion: "Usagi" is way cuter. It perfectly captures her personality.

"Serena" sounds like she should be sipping tea in a garden, not battling evil.

Mamoru Chiba: Darien Shields, My Knight in... Slightly Different Armor?

Next, we have Mamoru Chiba, or Darien Shields. "Mamoru" means "to protect." That's pretty straightforward.

Darien Shields sounds like a character from a Renaissance fair. I still love him, of course. But come on!

Maybe they thought "Mamoru" was too hard to pronounce? Still, I think they missed a golden opportunity there.

The Inner Senshi: A Mix of Literal and... Creative

Let's dive into the Sailor Guardians! Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) is pretty consistent. "Mizu" means water. "Mizuno" even sounds kinda cool in English, right?

Then we have Rei Hino (Sailor Mars). "Hi" means fire. No complaints there.

Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter) gives us "ki" for wood or tree. Also good.

And finally, Minako Aino (Sailor Venus)! "Ai" means love. Fitting for the guardian of beauty!

Name Changes That Make You Go "Hmm..."

It's the minor characters where things get... interesting. Remember Naru Osaka? In the English dub, she was Molly Baker.

Why? Was "Naru" too exotic? Was "Osaka" too…Japanese? It’s a mystery!

Then there’s Gurio Umino, Usagi's nerdy classmate. He became Melvin. Another complete name change. It makes you wonder about the thought process.

I suppose it was about localization. Making the show more relatable. But did it really need to change names so drastically?

In Conclusion: A Dubbing Dilemma

Look, I understand dubbing isn't easy. You have to consider lip-syncing, cultural differences, and all sorts of things. But sometimes, I wish they'd stuck closer to the original names.

Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking. Maybe I'm clinging to my childhood memories. But I still think Usagi is a better name than Serena.
