Let's talk about Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. It's free sometimes, right? Like, someone's streaming it, or it's on a random channel. And, dare I say it, I kind of enjoyed it.

I know, I know. Gamers were...passionate about its faithfulness (or lack thereof) to the source material. Film critics weren't exactly throwing roses either. But hear me out!

Maybe, just maybe, we went in with the wrong expectations. Was it a masterpiece? Nope. Was it a fun, cheesy zombie flick with familiar faces? Absolutely.

The Charm of "B" Movie Horror

Let's be honest. A lot of the charm comes from that "B" movie vibe. The slightly dodgy CGI? The over-the-top acting? It's all part of the experience!

Think of it like a pizza. Sometimes you want gourmet with truffle oil. Other times, you want a greasy, cheesy pizza from down the street. Raccoon City is that pizza.

And who doesn't love a good, guilty-pleasure movie? Especially one that's easily accessible and requires minimal brainpower after a long day?

Familiar Faces (Sort Of)

Sure, the characters might not be exactly as we remember them from the games. But the actors did their best with what they had.

Did Robbie Amell nail Chris Redfield? Debatable. Was he fun to watch running around with a big gun? You bet. And Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield? Definitely had the right attitude!

And let's not forget Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy. The perpetually sleepy rookie cop who somehow survives? Iconic.

Embracing the Cheese

The movie definitely leaned into the horror. Some of the jump scares were legitimately effective. And the gore? Pretty decent for a mainstream movie.

But it also embraced the inherent silliness of the Resident Evil universe. Giant spiders? Mutated dogs? A pharmaceutical company with truly awful security?

It's all there, and it's all glorious in its own way. We're talking about a franchise where herbs heal bullet wounds. A little bit of cinematic cheese is perfectly acceptable.

So, Why the Hate?

I think a lot of the hate came from comparisons to the games. And yes, it deviates. It changes things. But it's an adaptation, not a perfect recreation.

Trying to perfectly translate a game into a movie is almost always a recipe for disappointment. The mediums are just too different.

Maybe if we'd all gone in expecting a fun, slightly silly zombie movie inspired by Resident Evil, we would have enjoyed it more.
