Pacific Rim The Black Season 2 Episode 1

Okay, let's be honest. We all secretly binged Pacific Rim: The Black Season 2 the minute it dropped, right? I know I did.
Episode 1: Back in Black(water)...or Maybe Just Murky Brown?
Episode 1 picks up where we left off. Taylor and Hayley are still dragging poor Boy around. He's basically a giant, evolving toddler with killer instincts.
We're introduced to new faces. And let me tell you, some of them are...interesting. I mean, aren't they always?
Must Read
That New Crew Though...
Okay, unpopular opinion time. I wasn't immediately sold on the new characters. Maybe I'm just attached to the original cast?
But seriously, did we need another group of rugged survivors? It felt a bit like every other post-apocalyptic story ever.
Don't get me wrong, there's potential. The writers are clearly setting up some conflicts and mysteries. I just wasn't completely hooked from the get-go.

Boy, the Evolving Enigma
Let's talk about Boy. This kid (thing?) is the real star of the show. One minute he's cuddling, the next he's morphing into a Kaiju-fighting machine.
It's like watching a Pokemon evolution on steroids. And the stakes are a little higher, naturally.
I'm genuinely invested in Boy's journey. What will he become? Will he save humanity? Or accidentally destroy it? Only time will tell.

Kaiju Fight! (Sort Of)
Of course, it wouldn't be Pacific Rim without some Kaiju action. Episode 1 doesn't disappoint. We see some serious smashing.
The battle is good. Nothing as legendary as the Hong Kong brawl from the first Pacific Rim movie. But entertaining enough.
The animation is pretty smooth, and the Kaiju designs remain wonderfully monstrous. I just wish it had been a little longer.

The Verdict (My Unpopular Take)
Overall, Episode 1 is a decent start to the season. It sets the stage for what's to come. But it didn't blow me away.
Maybe my expectations were too high. Or maybe I'm just a grumpy Kaiju fan. Who knows?
The new characters need some work. They do however have interesting stories to tell.

I am interested in seeing what happens next with Boy, however. His is the story that I find most compelling in this episode.
"It's not the best Pacific Rim has to offer. But it's worth watching. Especially if you're already invested in the story."
Will I keep watching? Absolutely! I'm a sucker for giant robots fighting giant monsters. Plus, I need to know what happens to Boy!
But don't expect me to crown Episode 1 as the best thing since sliced bread. It's a decent starting point, nothing more and nothing less.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a whole season to binge. Wish me luck (and fewer underwhelming new characters).
