One Foot In The Grave Season 6 Episode 6

Okay, let’s talk One Foot In The Grave. Specifically, season six, episode six. "The Wisdom of the Witch." It's the one with the dodgy builders and Victor getting obsessed with a self-help book.
Some folks seem to love this episode. But, I’m gonna be honest. I'm not so sure. It's got its moments, sure. But is it a classic? Hmmm…
Victor's "Zen" Phase?
Victor Meldrew tries to find inner peace. He dives into a self-help book. Chaos, naturally, ensues.
Must Read
He's trying to be all "chill" and accepting. It's hilarious to watch him fail. It's just… a bit much, maybe?
The forced calmness just amplifies his frustration. I mean, we know Victor Meldrew. Accepting things isn't exactly his forte.
The Builders From Hell
Then there are the builders. Oh, those builders. They're… something else.
They’re incompetent. They're rude. Basically, everything you don't want in someone working on your house.
Victor's tolerance is tested to its absolute limit. And, well, we all know how that goes. Catastrophically, usually.

A Tad Too Over-The-Top?
Here's my possibly unpopular opinion. This episode feels a little too… exaggerated.
The builders are caricatures. Victor's self-help phase is a bit too on-the-nose. Even for One Foot In The Grave.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the show. The regular dose of exaggerated reality is usually its strength.
But this? It’s almost feels like they cranked the absurdity dial up to eleven. It looses a bit of the charm.
Margaret's Suffering
Poor Margaret. She’s constantly caught in the crossfire. She's always the voice of reason.

She tries to mediate between Victor and the world. Which is, let's face it, an impossible task.
Annette Crosbie's performance is, as always, brilliant. She deserves a medal.
Her exasperated sighs and long-suffering expressions are priceless. She anchors the show with her grounded performance.
The Witch... or Not?
Oh yeah, there's a witch involved. Or at least, someone claiming to be a witch.
It's all a bit of a distraction. It doesn't really add much to the main plot.

Just another source of Victor's annoyance. Which, let's be real, is pretty much everything and anything.
Is it Still Funny?
Yes, there are funny moments. Victor's sarcastic quips are always gold.
The physical comedy is still spot-on. Richard Wilson is a master of the art.
But compared to other episodes? This one feels a bit… weaker. It kind of misses the mark.
Maybe it's because the premise is a bit predictable. Victor tries something new, it goes wrong. Shocker.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe I need a dose of that self-help book myself.
Final Verdict
Look, it's still One Foot In The Grave. It’s still worth a watch.
But, in my humble opinion, "The Wisdom of the Witch" isn't a top-tier episode. It's not something I would actively recommend.
There are better episodes. Episodes with more nuanced humor. And less… builder-related rage.
So, watch it. Enjoy it. Or don’t. I won't judge. Unless you tell me it's your favorite episode. Then we might have a problem. (Just kidding… mostly.)
