Never Have I Ever Season 1 Episode 1

Okay, Let's Talk Never Have I Ever: Episode 1
Confession time: I just re-watched the first episode. I know, I know, some of you are obsessed. But let's be real for a sec.
It's good. It's just...is it that good?
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
Never Have I Ever, episode one, sets the stage. We meet Devi Vishwakumar, our protagonist. She's witty, she's awkward, she's grieving.
Must Read
And she's determined to lose her virginity. Understandable. High school is brutal.
But does anyone else find her a little self-centered in this episode?
I get it. Trauma. But maybe just a tad preoccupied with herself. I said what I said.
The "Glow-Up" Gambit
The show hits us with the iconic "glow-up" moment. Devi walks again! Miraculous! Or...convenient for plot purposes?

Don't get me wrong, I cheered. But part of me thought, "Wait, really? Just like that?"
Maybe I'm just cynical.
Enter Paxton Hall-Yoshida
Ah, Paxton. The resident hottie. The object of Devi's desire.
He's...pretty. And that's about all we get in this episode. Is it just me, or does he seem a little... vacant?

Hot, vacant, and probably smelling of teen spirit. Perfect for a high school crush.
The Prayer Scene: Hit or Miss?
The prayer scene. Iconic! Hilarious! Slightly sacrilegious?
Devi bargains with the gods. It's funny. It's relatable in a weird way.
But did anyone else cringe a little? Maybe it's just my overly cautious upbringing kicking in.
Eleanor and Fabiola: The Ride or Dies
Gotta give props to Eleanor and Fabiola. They are the best friends a girl could ask for. Even when Devi is being, well, Devi.

Eleanor's dramatic flair is perfect. Fabiola's awkwardness is endearing.
They deserve their own spin-off, stat!
Overall Verdict
Episode one is a good introduction. It sets up the characters. It introduces the conflicts. It hooks you in.
But is it a masterpiece? Debatable. Maybe I expected too much hype.

It does have heart and humor and a whole lot of teenage angst.
Final Thoughts (and More Unpopular Opinions)
Okay, unpopular opinion time. Did anyone else find the tennis montage a bit... long? Like, we get it, she's good at tennis.
And one more: is anyone actually convinced that Devi could suddenly be cool enough to date Paxton Hall-Yoshida after one summer? The show requires us to suspend disbelief here.
Don't get me wrong, I love the show. I devoured all the seasons. But rewatching the first episode? It's... good. Just not flawless. Let the hate comments commence!
"In the game of life, you are not on the bench, you are in the arena and you are the one calling the plays!" - Devi Vishwakumar (probably)
I'm just saying, maybe the standards were too high. Maybe Devi needed to grow on me. Or maybe, just maybe, my expectations were as unrealistic as Devi's dating goals.
