Hear me out, anime fans. We need to talk about My First Girlfriend Is A Gal. And specifically, about Yukana Yame.

I know, I know. She’s…a lot. But is she really that bad?

The "Problem" with Gal Characters

Let's be real. The "gal" archetype gets a bad rap. Flashy clothes, wild hair, maybe a little loud? Some see it as shallow. I get it.

They're often portrayed as airheads. Or, even worse, as antagonists. But is that fair?

I'm starting to think...maybe not.

Okay, on the surface, Yukana Yame is the epitome of a "gal." Dyed hair? Check. Crazy outfits? Check. Unabashed confidence? Mega-check.

But beneath the surface, there's something else. She's actually pretty kind.

And, dare I say, surprisingly genuine?

Here's where I might lose some of you. I think Yukana is actually a pretty good girlfriend. At least, for the eternally awkward Junichi Hashiba.

She pushes him out of his comfort zone. Which, let's face it, he desperately needs.

She accepts him, quirks and all. That has to count for something, right?

The "Teaching Moment" Gal

Think about it. Yukana is basically giving Junichi a crash course in...everything.

Social skills? Check. Dating etiquette? Check. How to not faint when a girl holds your hand? Still working on that one, but progress is progress!

She is actively trying to make him a better person. Isn't that what a good partner should do?

Not Saying She's Perfect...

Look, I'm not saying Yukana is a saint. She's got flaws. We all do.

She can be a bit demanding. And maybe a little oblivious sometimes. But she's learning.

And she's trying her best. Isn't that enough to give her a break?

Maybe We Should All Be a Little More Gal

Consider this. Maybe we could all learn a thing or two from the "gal" archetype. Like confidence.

Or being unapologetically ourselves. And maybe even just a little bit of boldness.

The world could use a few more Yukana Yames, wouldn't you agree?

So, yeah. I said it. I might actually like Yukana Yame. Judge me if you must.
