A Love Letter (Maybe?) to Grounded Warfare
Okay, I'm going to say it. I think it's a little...overrated. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the effort. But sometimes, I feel like people praise it just to sound sophisticated.
Giant robots fighting in a jungle? Cool. Shiro Amada's idealistic speeches? Less cool. Just my opinion, though!

The "Real Robot" Debate
Gundam fans love arguing about "real robot" versus "super robot." The 08th MS Team definitely leans towards the real side. But does it do it too much?
Sometimes, it feels like they're trying too hard. We get it, war is messy. Can we have some cool beam saber action too?
The grounded nature can be a blessing and a curse. It’s good to have a realistic portrayal of war. However, does it have to be so slow paced?
Shiro Amada: Idealist or Annoying?
Shiro is the protagonist. He believes in understanding his enemy. He hopes for peace. All noble goals, right?
But sometimes, his idealism is a bit much. Especially when people are actively trying to kill him and his team!
I mean, I admire his optimism. However, a little pragmatism wouldn't hurt, Shiro. Just saying!
Aina Sahalin: The Forbidden Romance
Aina is a compelling character. Her relationship with Shiro is the heart of the series. It is a classic forbidden romance.
But is their love story believable? Two people from opposing sides, falling for each other in the middle of a war? It seems a bit cheesy!
I do admit the ending is bittersweet. It makes me think of Romeo and Juliet… with giant robots.
The Mecha Design: Utilitarian and Functional
The mobile suits in The 08th MS Team are practical. No fancy bells and whistles here. These things are made for war.
The RX-79[G] Gundam is iconic. But compared to other Gundam designs, it's kind of...plain? Maybe that's the point?
And the Gouf Custom? Now that's a cool mobile suit. Who doesn’t love a mobile suit with a gatling shield?
Unpopular Opinion Time!
Okay, ready for my unpopular opinion? I think The 08th MS Team is good. But not as good as everyone says it is.
It's like that band everyone raves about. You listen to their album and think, "Yeah, it's alright." You secretly prefer their B-sides.
It deserves respect for its approach. But there is other Gundam series with better story telling in my opinion.
Ultimately, it's all subjective, right? Maybe I'm just a contrarian. Maybe I'm missing something.
I still enjoy watching Gundam. From the crazy space battles in Gundam Wing, to the philosophical dilemmas of Zeta Gundam.
At least we can all agree on one thing. Giant robots are awesome. Even if they're covered in mud!
