We got to see Riko, Reg, and Nanachi continue their descent into the unknown. Facing new challenges and meeting even stranger inhabitants. Imagine packing for a family vacation, but instead of sunscreen, you're packing grappling hooks and a hefty dose of existential dread.
And the animation! Studio Kinema Citrus really outdid themselves. The landscapes are stunning, the character designs are endearing (even the creepy ones!), and the action sequences are...well, let's just say they’re impactful.
The Golden City and its Secrets
Season 2 took us to the Sixth Layer of the Abyss, the "Capital of the Unreturned." This place is even more bonkers than what we've seen before.
Think bizarre, almost alien architecture, and creatures that defy description. Also, the introduction of new characters with equally tragic backstories. Because, you know, what's a trip to the Abyss without a healthy dose of trauma?
The season explored themes of family, sacrifice, and the lengths people will go to for their desires. All wrapped up in a beautifully horrifying package. Like a beautifully wrapped gift containing a venomous snake.

What is it about this show that captivates us despite its often disturbing content? Perhaps it's the unwavering friendship between Riko, Reg, and Nanachi. Their bond is a beacon of hope in a world of darkness and despair.
Maybe it’s the sense of discovery. The thrill of exploring the unknown, even when that unknown is filled with unimaginable dangers. It's the explorer in all of us, yearning to uncover the secrets of the world.
Or perhaps it’s the show's ability to balance the dark and the light, the beautiful and the grotesque. Showing us that even in the deepest, darkest abyss, there is still beauty and wonder to be found. Even if that beauty is slightly terrifying.
