Locked Up Abroad: My Slightly Controversial Take on Season 1, Episode 1

Okay, let's talk Locked Up Abroad. Specifically, Season 1, Episode 1. Remember that one?

It's the granddaddy of all Locked Up Abroad episodes. The one that started it all.

Young and... Naive?

Our protagonist, Christopher Parnell, jets off to Pakistan. He's got dreams of adventure. And maybe a little bit of making easy money?

He quickly gets caught up with some shady characters. Surprise, surprise!

Now, here's where my unpopular opinion comes in. Was he a little bit naive? Maybe even a lot?

I mean, flying halfway across the world to deal with… stuff... without doing your homework? That seems risky.

Don't get me wrong. I feel for the guy. Prison is awful. Especially a Pakistani prison in the 80s.

But a tiny part of me is like, "Dude, did you even Google 'Pakistan customs' before you left?"

The "Hero's" Journey?

He gets busted, naturally. The legal system wasn't very friendly. And things go from bad to worse.

The show paints him as a completely innocent victim. Totally blindsided by evil circumstances. Is this accurate? Well...

Again, I'm not saying he deserved it. But maybe a smidge of responsibility lies with him?

Let's be honest. Most of us, if offered a suspiciously large amount of money to do something vaguely illegal in a foreign country, would probably at least ask a few more questions, right?

Maybe that's just me. Okay, probably just me.

The Prison From Hell

The prison scenes are brutal. Overcrowding, disease, terrible food... it's a nightmare. You absolutely feel for Christopher Parnell here.

No one deserves that kind of treatment. It's inhumane.

The show does a fantastic job portraying the sheer desperation and hopelessness. You can practically smell the despair through the TV.

Escape Attempt Fails

He attempts to escape, which is incredibly brave (or maybe just incredibly desperate). Obviously, it goes horribly wrong.

More time added to his sentence. More suffering. It’s a constant down-ward spiral.

You can't help but admire his resilience. Despite everything, he doesn't give up.

My Verdict

Overall, it's a gripping episode. It's a cautionary tale about the dangers of being naive and impulsive when travelling abroad.

It’s also shows how horrible life can be in prisons in foreign countries.

My (mildly) controversial opinion? While Christopher Parnell was undeniably a victim of circumstance, a little more common sense could have saved him a whole lot of trouble.

But hey, maybe that's what makes for good TV, right? We watch these stories because we want to see people overcoming challenges. We want to see people tested to their limits. He gives us the whole package.

Despite my teasing, it’s truly a compelling story. It sets the tone for the whole series. A chilling reminder that adventure can quickly turn into a nightmare. So, yeah... maybe read up on those customs laws before you book that flight! Better safe than sorry. That is the moral of the story!
