Lily How I Met Your Mother Season 1

Okay, let's talk How I Met Your Mother. Season 1, to be exact.

Lily Aldrin: Season 1, A Little...Much?

I'm going to say something that might get me some hate. Ready? I found Lily a tad annoying in Season 1. There, I said it.

Don't get me wrong! I usually adore Lily! But Season 1 Lily? Hmmm...

She's a kindergarten teacher, right? Sweet, nurturing. Except, she's got a secret stash of credit card debt. Oops!

And she's obsessed with Marshall. Which is cute, mostly.

But sometimes it felt like her whole personality revolved around him. Red flag?

Let's not forget her meddling. Remember when she tried to break up Ted and Robin? Yikes.

She sabotaged dates, people! That's not cool, Lily. Not cool at all.

Sure, she thought she was doing it for Ted. But still! Boundary issues, much?

Marshall, bless his heart, seems oblivious. Madly in love, completely smitten.

He just wants to marry his kindergarten teacher girlfriend. And start a family.

You almost want to shake him and say, "Marshall, wake up! She's stealing your fries...and maybe your dreams!"

Then there's the whole art school thing. San Francisco calls to her. But at what cost?

She ditches Marshall. BAM! Heartbreak central.

I get chasing your dreams. But couldn't she have, you know, talked to him first?

Okay, okay. Season 1 isn't all bad Lily. She has her moments. Funny moments.

She's part of the gang. She's fiercely loyal (usually). And she loves Marshall.

Maybe Season 1 Lily is just a little lost. Trying to figure things out.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. Maybe I just relate to Marshall's heartbreak a little too much.

But I stand by it. Season 1 Lily needs a little side-eye.

Anyone else feel this way? Or am I alone on this island of unpopular HIMYM opinions?

The good news? Lily gets better. She grows. (Mostly.)

She and Marshall work things out. (Eventually.)

So maybe we can forgive Season 1 Lily. Maybe.

But I'll always remember the fry-stealing, date-sabotaging, art-school-dreaming Lily of Season 1.

She's a complex character. That's for sure.

And maybe that's why we love (and sometimes love to hate) her. The messy, imperfect Lily of it all.
