Keeper Of The Ashes: The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders Episodes
Emma Burns
Okay, let's talk Keeper of the Ashes: The Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders. Did everyone watch it? It feels like it was all anyone could talk about for a minute.
It's a heavy topic, no doubt. The tragic story of the three girls is heartbreaking. But, honestly, did anyone else feel like it was… a little long?
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
I'm just saying, four episodes felt like overkill. We got a lot of repetition. It felt like they were stretching things a bit thin, right?
Maybe it's just me. I have the attention span of a goldfish these days. Everything needs to be punchy and to the point!
Don't get me wrong, the investigation is fascinating. The Gene Leroy Hart saga is wild. He was definitely a character.
The Suspect Spectrum
And the theories! Oh, the theories. Was it Hart? Was it someone else? Did they have the right guy?

The documentary throws a lot out there. It makes you wonder about everything you thought you knew. Maybe too much, maybe too little, just the right amount, who knows.
I think the "maybe it was someone else" angle was interesting. The problem is, everyone in that small town was a suspect at some point, right?
It was like a giant game of Clue, but with real lives and real consequences. Professor Plum in the woods with the… well, you get the idea.
The Small Town Vibe
The documentary did a great job capturing the feel of a small town. Everyone knows everyone's business. Secrets are hard to keep.

That kind of atmosphere can breed suspicion. It can also protect the guilty. It's a double-edged sword for sure.
You can see it in the interviews. People were guarded. They were holding back. Years of unspoken things hanging in the air.
The interviews are what kept me watching, to be fair. Seeing the raw emotion from the people directly impacted by the crime was compelling.

Was it worth the watch?
Overall, Keeper of the Ashes is worth watching. It's a well-made documentary about a truly tragic event. The story alone is enough to keep you glued.
But, and this is a big but, be prepared for a slow burn. It's not exactly a thrill ride. More like a somber, reflective stroll through a dark forest.
Maybe that's what they were going for? To give the tragedy the respect it deserved? Who am I to judge their artistic choices?
It's a tough one.
It's a well-made documentary with a difficult story to swallow. Four episodes, or not, the horror remains.

So, my unpopular opinion? Good documentary, but maybe a tad too long. What do you think?
I can see the point of four episodes. Four episodes gave them room to explore the theories around Gene Leroy Hart's guilt, or innocence.
At the end of the day, the important thing is that the story is being told. The girls are not forgotten. Their memory lives on.
That being said, bring on the next true crime doc! Hopefully a shorter one this time. Maybe about a stolen chihuahua or something? Just kidding (mostly).
