Jonathan Creek The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp

Jonathan Creek The Curse Of The Bronze Lamp

Okay, let's talk about Jonathan Creek. Specifically, that one episode: The Curse of the Bronze Lamp.

I know, I know. Everyone loves it. It's got the whole shebang: creepy manor, ancient artifacts, seemingly impossible deaths. But... unpopular opinion incoming!

The Curse...or a Bit of a Snooze?

Am I the only one who finds it a tad... overrated? Don't get me wrong, the setup is fantastic.

A supposedly cursed lamp, a family with a dark past, and a series of unfortunate (and rather theatrical) demises. It screams classic Jonathan Creek.

But somewhere along the line, it just... loses its sparkle. It felt a bit too long, a bit too convoluted, and maybe just a tad predictable.

I think the mystery started promisingly, but the explanation failed to deliver the punch it needed.

The Devil's in the Details (or Lack Thereof?)

Remember the fake Egyptian expert, Professor Stephen Black? Good character. But did he really push the plot along that much?

Then there's the whole 'curse' element. It's supposed to be supernatural-ish, but Jonathan Creek usually pulls the rug out from under us with a logical, explainable solution.

This time, the explanation just felt... meh. A series of unlikely coincidences strung together with a bit of smoke and mirrors. It felt like a cheat.

Compare it to other episodes. Like, the one with the vanishing magician, or the locked-room murder in the theatre. They just feel tighter, smarter, and more satisfying.

A Matter of Taste?

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I was expecting too much. After all, Jonathan Creek has set a pretty high bar for itself.

And credit where it's due, the acting is superb, and the atmosphere is suitably spooky. Alan Davies is always fantastic.

But the core mystery just didn't quite grab me the way it usually does. It felt like they were trying too hard to be clever.

The reliance on overly elaborate contraptions felt excessive, pushing the boundary of credibility, even for Jonathan Creek.

Still Love Creek, Though!

Look, I'm not saying it's a bad episode. It's still Jonathan Creek! Even a mediocre episode is better than most stuff on TV.

And, who am I kidding, I watched it all the way through. Twice.

I just think, compared to some of the other masterpieces, it falls a little short. Just my opinion, of course.

Perhaps, my expectations were way higher than usual. Or it could just be that it was the week I wasn’t in the mood for a mystery.

Maybe I should give it another watch. Maybe I missed something. Maybe I'll change my mind.

But for now, The Curse of the Bronze Lamp remains, for me, a slightly disappointing chapter in the otherwise brilliant world of Jonathan Creek.

What do you think? Am I completely off my rocker? Or did anyone else feel a little let down by this particular mystery?

I'm ready for the backlash!
