Is There A Movie For Lord Of The Flies

Okay, let's talk Lord of the Flies. We all "loved" reading it in school, right? (Insert heavy sarcasm here.) But was there a movie? Or movies?
Movies? Plural?
Yes, my friends, prepare yourselves. There are actually multiple film adaptations of William Golding's classic. Mind. Blown.
I know, I know. You're probably thinking, "Why? Why subject ourselves to more of that island chaos?" Trust me, I feel your pain.
Must Read
The Classic: 1963
First up, we have the OG. The 1963 black and white version. Think grainy footage, questionable acting, and a whole lot of boys behaving badly.
It's… faithful. Let's go with that. Faithful to the book's depressing and brutal themes.
Honestly, I'd rather reread the book than watch it again. But hey, maybe that's just me.

The Remake: 1990
Then there's the 1990 remake. Color! Actors you might slightly recognize! Slightly less depressing, maybe?
Except, not really. It's still a bunch of kids going crazy on an island. Just with a slightly bigger budget.
Did it improve on the original? Debatable. Did it make me want to build a civilization? Absolutely not.
Unpopular Opinion Time!
Now, here's where I might lose some of you. But I have a confession to make.

I… kind of think Lord of the Flies is overrated. There! I said it!
Don't get me wrong. The themes are important. The message is powerful. But the execution? Snooze fest (in both book and movie form).
Maybe... Just Maybe...
Perhaps, the problem isn't the adaptations. Maybe it is the source material. Are we really surprised that unsupervised children turn into savages?
I mean, have you seen a playground during recess? It's basically the same thing, just with less face paint and more juice boxes.

So, are there movies for Lord of the Flies? Yes. Are they amazing? In my humble opinion, not really.
The Real Question
The real question is: why do we keep making them? Is it morbid curiosity? A desire to see childhood innocence destroyed on screen?
Or maybe we're just hoping that this time, the kids will build a functional society and learn to share. Spoiler alert: they don't.
So, if you're looking for a feel-good movie about the triumphs of human nature, steer clear. Very clear.

My Recommendation?
If you absolutely must experience Lord of the Flies in visual form, maybe just watch the Simpsons parody. At least that's funny.
And it has donuts. Always a plus.
Otherwise, I'd recommend reading a different book. Or taking a nap. Anything is better than reliving those island nightmares.
Just kidding! (Mostly.) Watch them if you dare. But don't say I didn't warn you!
