Is The Show Candy Based On A True Story

Okay, let's talk about Candy. You know, the show with Jessica Biel and a whole lot of '80s hair? It was a big hit! But did anyone else feel like something was... off?
I have a confession. I think Candy, while entertaining, took some serious liberties. Prepare yourselves for my unpopular opinion!
The "True" Story... Or Is It?
The show claims to be based on the real-life story of Candy Montgomery. She was a Texas housewife who killed her friend, Betty Gore, with an axe. Pretty heavy stuff, right?
Must Read
Now, true crime adaptations always play with the facts. But Candy seemed to gloss over some pretty important details. Like, a lot.
Selective Storytelling
Did you notice how Candy painted Candy Montgomery as almost... sympathetic? I mean, sure, she was stressed and bored. But that doesn't excuse, you know, axe murder.
The show focused heavily on Candy's dissatisfaction. We saw her affair and her attempts to spice up her life. It felt like they were trying to justify her actions. (Spoiler Alert: they weren't very good at it!).

What about Betty Gore? She seemed more like a plot device than a fully realized person. It felt unfair to her memory.
Hollywood's "Creative License"
Let's be honest, Hollywood loves a good drama. And sometimes, drama means exaggerating details. Or completely changing them!
Think about it. Sensationalized stories get more viewers. More viewers mean higher ratings. Higher ratings mean... well, you get the picture!

I suspect Candy fell victim to this trend. They took a dark, complex story and turned it into something a little too... digestible. Maybe even palatable.
The Problem with Romanticizing Murder
My biggest gripe? The show almost romanticized Candy's situation. It subtly suggested that she was a victim of circumstance.
I'm not saying she wasn't unhappy. But portraying her as a wronged woman who simply "snapped" is dangerous. It minimizes the brutality of her crime. It's disrespectful to Betty Gore and her family.

True crime should be handled with sensitivity. Candy, in my humble opinion, missed the mark.
So, Is It Really Based on a True Story?
Technically? Yes. It is based on a real event. But the show seems to have picked and chosen which parts to emphasize.
And those choices significantly altered the narrative. They created a version of events that is, at best, a heavily embellished version of the truth.

Ultimately, I think Candy should be viewed as a work of fiction inspired by a true crime. A very, very loose inspiration, mind you.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching the show! Jessica Biel was fantastic. But I can't help but feel a little uneasy about how the story was presented.
Maybe I'm just too sensitive. Or maybe I just think Betty Gore deserved better representation. Whatever the reason, I'm sticking to my unpopular opinion!
What do you think? Am I being too harsh? Let me know!
